Вильгельм Завоеватель завоевал. И занят выпизживанием недовольных и подавлением мятежей. Горе побежденным и все дела. Уолтеф Хантингдонский – знатый англо-сакс, чьему отцу принадлежала вся Нортумбрия, не принимал участие в битве при Гастингсе, так что Вильгельм к нему снисходителен. Но тут Уолтефа угораздило втрескаться в его племянницу.
Все перснажи абсолютно реальны, и автор даже ни в чем не наврала, просто нам известны сухие факты, а она расцветила их человеческими эмоциями. Могло быть так, а могло быть и по-другому. Читается, как обычно у Чедвик, очень увлекательно. Персонажи у нее вышли очень живыми и выпуклыми, так что я громко орала от возмущения. Есть еще вторая книга, про следующее поколение, но она пока не переведена. Очень интересно с познавательной точки зрения. Вот Вильгельм завоевал Англию, а дальше что? Как он ее удержал, что там происходило? Про все это есть, причем совсем не скучно. Удивительно, что все исторические романы, написанные тетками, относят к жанру любовного романа, хотя им во многих случаях и не пахнет.
