На что могла рассчитывать девушка в XIX веке, будь она хоть сто раз красива, умна и образована, если у нее нет ни гроша за душой, нет родных, а происхождение ее сомнительно? Скромно чахнуть гувернанткой, надеясь на появление мистера Рочестера, уйти в монастырь, пойти в компаньонки к вздорной старушке. Или же ловить богатого мужа. Но это, конечно, футакойбыть.
Нет, никак у меня не получалось зафукать Ребекку. Какое в жопу тщеславие, ей было просто страшно умереть под мостом в коробке. Зато Эмилия в книге бесила до припадка.
Теккерей же наказал Ребекку примерно, совершенно в духе Льва Николаича: тетка должна смиренно принимать свою долю, знать свое место и не выдрючиваться. Потому сделаю-ка я из Ребекки под конец вообще безнравственное чудовище, а из Эмилии святую. Ну, спасибо, что не под поезд или не сифилисом поразил, как Лев Николаич Анну и Элен Безухову. А вот Эмилия, хорошая девочка, за терпение и страдания заслуживает ноого, хорошего мужа и еще одного ребенка. Мимими.
Сериал BBC этого года совершенно канонический (кроме современной музыки на вступительных титрах), на что там фыркают британские зрители, я не поняла. Дух книги и сюжетная линия сохранены. Ребекка чертовски обаятельна и хороша, Эмилия – розовый поросенок, но не бесящий. Родон большой, красивый и туповатый (зато нежный отец), Джордж – симпатичный мудак, капитан Доббин отличный, но лучше всех Кроули – сэр Питт и Матильда.
Создатели сериала, кстати, тоже явно благоволят Ребекке, у них она вовсе не чудовище, а обаятельная авантюристка, вынужденная бороться за существование. Да и в финале они к ней намного более добры, чем Теккерей.
