Практически с самого начала младшие дети стали замечать присутствие чего-то в доме, но старшие дети и родители не хотели им верить, пока не стало слишком поздно: отцу с детьми в охапке пришлось бежать в ночи.
Жизнь детей омрачена трагедией, все они выросли в ее тени. Старший сын, Стивен, прагматик, пытался убедить себя, что он ничего не видел и написал книгу о Доме, где выставил членов своей семьи сумасшедшими. У Ширли сложные отношения со смертью, она владеет похоронным бюро. Тео стала детским психологом, и это связано не только с ее детской травмой, но и ее даром чувствовать эмоции людей. Люк и Элеонора пострадали больше всех, к тому же им до сих пор никто не верит. Люк продолжает видеть какие-то сущности и забывается в наркотиках. Каждую секунду ждешь, что что-то произойдет, и оно происходит! И это не банальное бу! Это рука, которая тихо обнимает спящего ребенка, это что-то на переферии зрения, это кто-то молча стоящий за спиной.
И близко нет банального объяснения, как в старой экранизации: никаких старых трупов, закопанных в камине, все намного сложнее, интереснее и пронзительнее. Да, это слово вполне применимо, потому что сериал заставляет не только содрогаться от ужаса и лезть под стол, но и бесконечно жалеть участников истории.
