Причем прилетел в голову. Это вызвало у нее настоящую истерику и преждевременные роды, от которых она так и не оправилась. В городке их с мужем и так считали странными, а после-единогласно признали сумасшедшими, особенно миссис Демпстер.
Один из мальчиков, Данни, чувствовал вину за случившееся, а его мать (ничего не зная о снежке) взялась опекать непутевую жену священника. Сам же Данни пронес эту вину через всю жизнь и даже умудрился построить свою жизнь вокруг миссис Демпстер. Она невольно обусловила и род его занятий – считая ее святой, он увлекся изучением святых и стал историком. А что же второй мальчик? Он никакой вины не чувствовал. Будучи из богатой семьи, он сумел приумножить состояние, и по жизни шел победителем, не забывая, впрочем, старого друга. Но был еще третий, Пол, сын миссис Демпстер, хилый ребенок, изгой общества, с которым Данни пытался дружить, но был лишен такой возможности.
Историю рассказывает Данни, к тому времени Данстан (по имени святого) Рамзи на закате своей жизни. И отклеиться от нее невозможно с первых страниц!

Примадонна и тенор, контральто и бас получают на свою долю лучшие арии и блистательные деяния, но без Пятого персонажа сюжет не построишь!”
