Начало 20 века, Монтана. Степь да степь кругом. Точнее, бескрайние равнины. По ним два брата-владельца ранчо гонят скот. Один брат – чуть округлый и добрый, второй – грязный, злой и дрябложопый. На их пути – отель, который держит вдова. Бедная женщина крутится, как может, и очень любит своего сына-подростка, тонкого-звонкого-нежного. Смотрится он на равнинах Дикого Запада так же уместно, как Мона Лиза в вокзальном сортире. Округлый немедленно замечает нежную душу женщины и проникается к ней всеми чувствами сразу: от жалости до нежности. Висложоп бесится и кроет почем зря мамсика и его маму. Но увы, Округлый настроен серьезно, так что им всем придется жить вместе на ранчо.
Фильм (основанный на романе Томаса Сэвиджа) ловко корежит сразу два шаблона, и это очень круто: шаблон гейский и шаблон мужского авторитета (больше сказать не могу, чтобы не спойлерить). Неспешное повествование немного расслабляет зрителя, который перестает ждать подвоха, несмотря на музыку, которая какбэ намекает: хуяк все равно будет. Так что хуяк запросто можно провтыкать, сходив пописать. Ставьте на паузу.
Кукумбер, как я уже и сказала, сыграл одну из лучших своих ролей: персонаж не однозначно мерзкий, а очень даже интересно-многогранно мерзкий. На его фоне не теряются Коди Смит-Макфи (опять в роли крошки-задрота, как в “Медленном Западе”, но есть нюанс) и все время расквашенно-рыдающая Кирстен Данст.
Что касается названия, то без поллитры тут не обойтись: потому что это из цитата из Книги Псалмов, причем из Библии короля Якова (ее в финале читает один из героев). На английском эта цитата звучит совсем не так, как на русском и украинском, где про власть нет, только про псов: “Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.”
