  7. Joker: Folie À Deux (15, 138 mins)
    Verdict: Bold, brilliant sequel

    Rating:

    A Different Man (15, 112 mins)
    Verdict: A touching satire

    Rating:

Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades,
    was the perfect place to unveil Joker five years ago;
and last month, at the venerable film festival there,
it was followed by the sequel, Joker: Folie À Deux.

The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose
we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.

We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she
really is terrific in a bad-girl role. They’d
have loved her at St Trinian’s.

This film is audaciously different in style from the
original, not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same.

Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether
he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status with
fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic
Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in sequel Joker: Folie À Deux

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie a Deux – an American musical
psychological thriller film directed by Todd Phillips

Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as the Joker, with Lady Gaga joining the cast as his
    love interest, Harley Quinn

Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose, to
becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn. The pair hit
it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear that she loves
the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur.

Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the vulnerable
fellow behind it? Either way, identity confusion is
the theme of this film, which keeps being billed as
    a musical.

It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s
burgeoning love for one another. And there are a couple of swooning dance
routines that make them look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land
    (2016).

Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity
to escape, yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott
Silver skilfully toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate
which way the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling
    off in another direction.

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie a Deux – an American musical psychological thriller film directed by Todd Phillips

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping
film about mental illness, writes Brian Viner

Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a smug interviewer
played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by
the subject of multiple personality disorder. Is the defendant accused of five murders Arthur, or
is it Joker? His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show
it is the former; Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as his demonic
    alter ego.

His Three Daughters review: Savour this exquisite elegy to death and sisterhood, writes BRIAN VINER

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this
sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a
gripping film about mental illness; not quite comparable with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too far off.

    – Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of
New York City. The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing
story, splendidly written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner struggling with life.

In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan), an aspiring actor, that’s
apparently because he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos seem to be
about as far as he can get in the acting world.

There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980), and for that matter of recent release The Substance, in which Demi Moore’s character, a former
movie star ‘disfigured’ by a few wrinkles, finds a way of transforming
    into her own younger self.

A still from the film A Different Man directed by Aaron Schimberg

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has presented itself’.
In other words, medical science has found a way to reverse his condition, turning him into
    a perfectly attractive middle-aged man.

But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical
swagger, is that Edward, despite his radical change in appearance, is still the same person underneath that he always was.

In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty,
charismatic neighbour, Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), a playwright.
Now he is able to fall into bed with her, and to
star in a play she has written about their relationship, little though she knows
    of his real identity.

I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire
(1993) as Edward’s new persona fundamentally fails to alter who
he actually is. This is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald,
an Englishman with the same condition Edward once
had, but popular, witty, confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer from a disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).

Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under The Skin (2013).
Which is apt, because this picture, too, is about what’s under the skin.

-A longer review of Joker: Folie À Deux ran a month ago.
Both films are in cinemas now.

Paul Weller’s film debut? That’s entertainment!
The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world premiere of Blitz, director Steve McQueen’s drama
set in London as the Luftwaffe’s bombs rain down night after night.

Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented
actresses of her generation, plays Rita, an East End
mum whose son George (Elliott Heffernan) goes missing. It sounds intriguing even without
the casting of The Jam’s former front man Paul Weller — in his
feature film debut — as Rita’s father.

I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere, Joy, the story of the three brilliant British medical pioneers whose work on IVF led to the world’s
first ‘test-tube’ baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.

Saoirse Ronan, Elliott Heffernan and Paul Weller in the film
    ‘Blitz’

It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV work on shows such as Sex Education and
Catastrophe, and stars Bill Nighy, James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie.

I have heard great things about Conclave, the adaptation of Robert
Harris’s novel starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci.

A couple of new documentaries catch the eye, too. One of them
is made by actress Sadie Frost, whose directing debut was a film about Mary
Quant. This time she turns to another fashion icon of the 1960s,
    with a feature called Twiggy.

And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’ look at the star’s life and
career. It’s been made by his long-time partner David Furnish, so… we’ll see.

How Celine Dion fought Stiff Person Syndrome every day to be fit to open the Olympics

Dion burst out laughing and said ‘never mind!’ before suggesting she ask the question in a strong French accent.

After this Siri responded: ‘Okay, here is ‘Hymne à l’amour by Céline Dion.’

Dion looked shocked before smiling and giving the thumbs up.

In July Dion made a musical comeback with the track at the 2024 Paris Olympic Opening Ceremony amid her battle with incurable condition, stiff-person syndrome.

28 years after making her Olympic debut in 1996 at Atlanta’s stadium, Celine proved she’s still got it following her emotional act in the French city at the Eiffel Tower.

And after bringing fans to tears, Celine reflected on the iconic moment with a heartfelt message on X.

She wrote: ‘I’m honored to have performed tonight, for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favorite cities!

‘Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance.

  11. Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness
entrepreneur Liz Earle, is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with what looks like a small sponge floating in murky
    water.

‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I don’t entirely share.

(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and
yeast’, which is what’s used to ferment sweetened tea to make
kombucha. I don’t realise at the time, but this hideous thing takes
weeks to develop and is in fact a very generous gift.)

The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me
Liz’s zip. At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother, she honestly looks 20
years younger. Fans of her YouTube channel and her
170,000 Instagram followers will know how bright and smooth her skin is, but
in person she is fizzing with energy, too.

Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time
she has somehow seemed to gain in vitality as I, nine
years her junior, have… well, deflated.

Beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, right,
and Beatrice Aidin met back in the 1990s when they were both beauty journalists

So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight weeks,
morning to night, to see just how much I, too,
    can turn back the clock.

I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground myself’ in a flower bed in my pyjamas like her, and even tape up my mouth à la Liz.
From my gut to my hormones, my brain to the very cells of my skin, I will follow the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her new book
A Better Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live
A Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, which swiftly became a bestseller
    on its release this year.

Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.

‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change the way we age?’ she asks.

‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my
50s than I was in my 40s, so why can’t I be even more so in my 60s, 70s and beyond?’

Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash of emotional wreckage’ caused by the breakdown of her second
marriage, and the divorce she went through in 2020, she now says:
    ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at 40.’

Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s
we were both beauty journalists. At launches for
new products, I’d merrily down the free Krug while Liz sipped sparkling water.
‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she says.

Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed… and I’m suffering major work anxiety, a not-unrelated financial crisis and severe sciatica.

Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and I have dark circles under
my eyes. Physical pain interferes with my sleep, and I’ve
been turning rather too readily to the sauvignon blanc to help me nod off.

Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving sugar, which means I’m a good 10lb heavier than I
    should be.

So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as young as she looks?
More to the point – can I really stick to it, kombucha and all?

‘Come on Bea, get off your backside!’ Liz demands…

Liz (left) puts Beatrice through her paces in the
gym. Beatrice needs extra help with exercise because of her sciatica

Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low carb,
meaning she’s a fan of lots of foods I love but didn’t think I should eat:
butter, unprocessed meat, avocados, good quality cheese, taramasalata and thick Greek yoghurt.

High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape, and lose that middle-aged spread,’ she says.

Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day
    – brunch around 11am and dinner at 7pm. The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice, because eating protein before carbs keeps blood sugar levels
    stable.

In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before 2pm)
because studies show four to five cups is ‘strongly associated with living longer’ thanks to the
bioactives in coffee beans such as chlorogenic acid.

She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her
intake of spermidine – a dietary molecule that interacts with our DNA and mimics an anti-ageing process called autophagy, which de-ages us at a cellular level.

Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine or
tequila, but never more than two and never alone.

I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves and start cooking from
scratch. I grill venison, roast a chicken and make soups with the leftovers.

Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first thing –
and enjoying the protein part of each meal first means I’m fuller and find
it easy to cut back on my carb portions.

Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented foods.
Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start to brew my own using Liz’s Scoby.
But homemade kimchi – fermented veg – is a harder sell.

When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself to eat something
I dislike so much, I reply solemnly: ‘Liz told me to.’

Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means my normal routine
    has gone to pot.

Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day of exercises such as squats,
lunges and press-ups is more valuable in the long term than a high-intensity gym session once a week or a long park run.

She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, who delivers the (bombshell, but welcome) news that running any distance over 5k can ‘start to have
negative effects’ on our immune system and bone strength.
If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding up your time, not increasing your distance.

    At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio
about my sciatica, and then he devises a daily regime for me.
I try press-ups and make it to three. Mortifying. Perseverance is clearly key.
As are weights, especially in your 50s. ‘The more muscle you have, the more your bones are protected from osteoporosis, especially during
    midlife,’ says Michael.

For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a week.
But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up
    the laps

For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses and hammer curls,
with 3kg weights in both hands. I try tricep dips off a chair,
and quickly find I can increase my reps – until
by week four I’m doing two sets of 15.

I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine takes 40 minutes but the more I do, the faster I do it, until the whole thing – stretching, press-ups, weights – takes just 20 minutes.

For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps.

Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how I feel,
    which is sluggish and foggy.

Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’ – the specific collection of bacteria in the gut
that influences how our body uses oestrogen. Put simply, some microbes improve the efficiency with which oestrogen reaches tissues around the
body, meaning we use our dwindling supplies more effectively.

The best way to support your estrobolome is by
eating fibre from veg, seeds and nuts, plus some of the low-sugar fruits such as apples, berries and plums.
Back to the supermarket I go.

To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my saintly mentor insists
I finish my morning shower with a minimum 60-second blast
of icy cold water, resulting – she claims
    – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.

Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a hot shower and feel not happy but mutinous
as I step out of the bathroom shivering.

Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first
thing in the morning and standing barefoot on the grass.
‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the surface of the Earth to transmit deep into the body, ‘where they have an anti-inflammatory
    effect’.

Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her glorious pile in the West
Country. I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas, and
feel, well, very self-conscious. Later I graduate to the park, and – look
away now – tread in dog mess, which does not improve my emotional wellbeing.

She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice
a day. ‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports the immune system,’
    she says.

I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a lot more to smile about
than me but, following instructions, I write down three things I am grateful for every morning, and every night a short list of
‘good things’ that happened that day, plus another (longer) list of ‘things that are concerning me’.

My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I find it does make me realise
what’s important and what’s not. It helps me see
that things are a lot brighter than I thought. Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t
find my journal and am surprised by how bereft I feel without it.

Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and end up hitting my snooze button past 8.30am…
    and occasionally edging towards 10am.

Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they follow her routine, which means setting an evening alarm for 9pm – to remind yourself to
    start ‘winding down for bed’.

Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by a printed book or a podcast.
She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky
drink half an hour before bed (and stops eating two hours before).

Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning

Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because she
sleeps with an open window, which she covers with blackout
blinds and curtains, and sprinkles her pillow with a few drops of neat lavender essential oil.

I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this routine.
Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy a regular alarm clock.

The lavender oil makes me sneeze, so I spray my pillows with C.

    Atherley Geranium Spray instead.

Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me how when she delivers the
kombucha. Forcing yourself to breathe through your nose is said to promote more restful sleep.

All of this is time-consuming and takes practise, but I
find the ritual soothing. Five weeks in, I’m getting to sleep
earlier than I have for years – at 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off time -and waking at 7.30am.
    How virtuous!

Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend who chirpily suggests a
glass of wine, which turns into a bottle. And then a second.
Later, with a daytime hangover, I head to M&S and
find reduced dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner.

Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo (£289 for two months – you jab
a biosensor the size and shape of a plastic bottle top into your upper arm,
and then link it to an app on your phone), which shows a massive post-potato spike and then a huge slump, which makes
me tired and irritable. Who knew that such deliciousness had such a high glycaemic load?

I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I lie in, eat
too much cake and drink too much tequila,’ she says.
‘But that’s fine because you then know what to do to put it right.
It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!

Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By
documenting what I was so worried about day by day, my perspective on it
    changes.

Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt at the start of this project and how I’ve
    evolved.

I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s been easy
because change is uncomfortable, but I realise there’s simply nothing to be gained from the worry spiral.

If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something about it.
Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action, I apply for part-time admin jobs.
As personal trainer Michael observes as we work out on Zoom, I
wouldn’t have done this before. He’s right.
Finally I’ve started to take control.

Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?

Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and
taken an extraordinary 5 in off my waist and 11 in off my body as a whole.

Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping 40 per workout, and the measly 3kg
weights are now 6kg, meaning I have proper bicep definition. The sleeveless tops will be coming out again this party season.

My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more defined because I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat.
I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely less anxious.

Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica is almost gone and
I can come off strong painkillers. I know sciatica can disappear of
its own accord, but the timing is surely no coincidence.
All those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my spine and buttocks
and I’m convinced it’s done the trick.

I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see
a difference. ‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good
look at her pupil. ‘Those arms! You definitely look younger.’

We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content and optimistic.
You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’

Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she? (Probably.
Though Liz is known for her candour, so it’s not a given.)
‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself enough and commit,’ she admits ‘You
weren’t an easy nut to crack so I’m thrilled.’

I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to her, which is one
of the key lessons I’ve learned. Gratitude makes everything feel better.

That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have learned to love) and the odd tequila – are the habits I’ll hold on to.

But not (shudder!) the kimchi or flower beds.

As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second half – and if I can do it, anyone can.

A Better Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live
A Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, by Liz Earle (Hodder &

  14. LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more
than two thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up
from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift
    to healthier alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S.,
the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year.
Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.

    states ahead of the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.

states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after PMI
receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected
    it from 2025, he continued.

“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of
the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first
    year would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity
analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.
It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big
tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for
revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there
in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.

PMI shares were up 1.5% on Thursday. (Reporting by Emma Rumney in London and Granth Vanaik

  16. Every wine producing region of Italy makes a particular type of
wine, according to the grapes they crop. This is one European country that is honored in their Italian wine options,
which are not that pricey. By going for a Montepulciano wine tour,
you will surely get almost two thousand types of grapes being harvested in the Italy.

Therefore, you can guess the different types of wines readily the country manufacturers.

You may find yourself intermix among the various
versions. You will find unlimited flavors right from light to full-bodied with fruity or
dry wine flavors with oak or smoky undertones. There is a history
behind wine production in Italy. The wine making
process here first originated much before
than you can possibly expect. It commenced during the period of Etruscan culture of the 18th century BC.
The archaeological department mentions that artefacts and remnants found in the region render scholars
evidence regarding the fact that, wine was exported to places all
across Gaul and Italy. Many landowners transform their grape
harvest into wine, with a goal to sale it to the dealers in Florence.

Nonetheless, if you are thinking about wine tours from
Florence, you may seldom come to know that the sale of such initial wines was not as simple as nowadays.
People who was involved in this business had to face the
stringent rule. There was strict rule that no wine should be sold within 100 yards of a church.

Till date, the country is quite popular for its wines.
If you will think of visiting the places where wines
are manufactured, Veneto, Tuscany or Piedmont will arise in your mind.
Besides this, Le Marche is not a place that is popular all over the world; it does produce
some top quality wines Falerio dei coli Ascolani and Verdicchio dei
Castelli among the white wine and Rosso Piceno and Rosso Conero aming the red wines also.
Vernaccia is one such popular red wine. Be sure that, top
quality wines in Italy has the label Denominazione d’Origine Controllata(DOC).
The labels of wines promote the production of quality wines.
Italian wines, nevertheless, have become the regular
consumption item for the local people and also the visitors,
no matter whatever is the label. The Conero peninsula near the Arcona is a region of natural beauty and
also the home of Rosso Conero which is a full bodied red wine
manufactured with a minimum of eighty five percent Montepulciano and maximum Sangiovese grape in the regions of Ascoli Piceno,
Fermo, Macerata, and Ancona. The wines of Italy have considerably earned the extra title of superior.
They, obviously, ensure tremendous taste if
consumed with cheese dishes or meat. Thus your San Gimignanowine tour
that you may be planning for will surely turn out to be an awesome tour.

  20. You have appointed the best lawyer for a divorce in Singapore and starting up with the legal process.

However, it is only half of the work done. There is much more that has to
go in to ensure smooth litigation.

It is way more complicated than it sounds. You need
to take care of few things before the case takes its pace to
    ensure everything is on track.

The most significant thing is to communicate everything to your lawyer.

Discuss everything from basics to detailed information keeping nothing hidden. What are the
    things that you must discuss?

Here is the list to help you understand the key
points you must talk through with your divorce lawyer in Singapore.

    Things you must discuss

    Issues

Divorces do not happen on zero grounds; there must be conflicts, a difference of opinion, and a lot more laying
the foundation. Whatever the reasons are, you need to tell it clear
and straight to your lawyer. If you have faced abuse, let your lawyer know about
it at the earliest. When your lawyer knows about every little detail of your case, only then can he
help you get through with the separation conveniently.

Different issues form different grounds for a court case.
Generally, cases that involve abuse or domestic violence are one-sided and end up pretty soon being
in favor of the spouse who has been a victim. In any scenario, your divorce lawyer must be aware of the
same to proceed with the case in the required manner.

    Expectations

As you are going through the legal process for separation, you sure must
have some expectations. Whether the expectation is tangible or
intangible, your lawyer must be well aware of it. Additionally, if you need spousal maintenance, put this expectation in front of your lawyer at an early stage.

Based on your preferences, the lawyer will advise you if there is any strength in them, and you
can get the desired results or not. If not, your lawyer will also guide you with the alternative or
compensating terms that are most likely in your
    favor.

    Finances

There are two aspects that you need to discuss when it comes to finances.
Firstly, how economically sound are you to drag the case into the courtroom?

Secondly, the mutual finances that you have with your spouse will go through division now.
If you are getting a divorce in Singapore, you and your divorce lawyer must see the situation.

You must provide all the necessary information and documents to your
lawyer to review and analyze how he needs to work through it.

Coming to your personal financial aspect, put it in front
of your lawyer well in advance. Let him know how you wish to proceed with the case and how much you are willing to
invest if the trial takes time in the courtroom. Knowing this,
he can suggest ways that suit your budget.

    Child Custody

One of the most crucial aspects of a divorce is Child Custody.

The involvement of children means the couple
has to be sensible enough to do things differently. Discuss
the situation and your expectation with your lawyer.
If you wish to have physical custody of your child, you must have valid grounds.

Moreover, to figure out the co-parenting plan, you would require your divorce lawyer’s
legal assistance in Singapore. Hence, make it a point to talk
through all these details with your lawyer.

    Takeaway

Your legal representative is your guiding light in a lawsuit.
It is vital to discuss every little detail related to the case with him well on time to ensure things don’t get rough.
Consider all the factors that are listed to keep things
    sorted and manageable.

  22. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights
for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.

In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the
subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.

And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost
to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,
500 votes — every ballot truly will count.

In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers
in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to
back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution —
and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.

To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”

She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Une pancarte barrée du slogan “L’indifférence aux élections est dangereuse”, à Tucson, en Arizona, le 16 octobre 2024

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of
federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked
in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.

Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences
for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.

“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told AFP.

    – ‘Abortion is murder’ –

As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.

Donald Trump lors d’un meeting à Tempe, en Arizona, le 24 octobre 2024

“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.

But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.

“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.

“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions,
he conceded, “but that’s very small.”

He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during
    the Biden-Harris administration.

“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.

“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”

So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone
suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border
police who work for the federal government.

“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez
    said.

    – Mixed impact –

The major political parties see the competing referendums as
offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote
    — on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential
    campaigns.

    Anti-abortion activists demonstrate outside a
clinic in Phoenix, Arizona on April 18, 2024

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.

Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding
    a very narrow lead.

Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass.

So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,”
said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona
    State University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to
bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.

Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue, the
Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue
that also raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump
Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona
    state senator.

The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening
on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered
    in recent months.

The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

  23. Red takes center stage as the hottest color of the holiday season.

All red looks have been trending with the fashion set for
some time, but after Rihanna attended the Fenty Hair launch party
in a monochromatic look accessorized with multiple ruby baubles, red-on-red became cooler than ever.

The ‘Stay’ hitmaker donned a custom red leather Khaite jacket and skirt with ruby and diamond jewelry by Sabyasachi, David Webb and Reza.

Monochromatic outfits, particularly in red, exude confidence and sophistication.

With the vibrant color being synonymous with the holiday season, it’s a natural choice for parties and festive
    gatherings.

By also accessorizing with ruby jewelry (à la Rihanna) you can add
a touch of luxury to even the simplest of separates.

Unlike your grandmother’s precious jewels, today’s ruby designs are being reimagined by edgy jewelers that aren’t taking the gem so seriously.

Rubies are often referred to as the ‘king of gemstones’ and their vibrant color – caused by the presence of chromium – is often associated with
    passion, love, and power.

The name ‘ruby’ comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’ which means red.

Rubies are incredibly sought after for their beauty and
durability, they are ranked 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness (qualitative
scale that measures the relative hardness of
minerals and other materials by their resistance to scratching), second to diamonds.

Beyond their sparkle and strength, they have held cultural significance for centuries.

Throughout history, rubies have been associated with
nobility and wealth, often adorning the crowns of
kings and queens. They are also believed to bring good fortune and protection to their wearer.

According to Melee the Show founders Lauren Wolf and Rebecca Overmann,
ruby jewelry is on the rise.

The fine jewelry trade show connects buyers and designers, with the next shows taking place in New York (February 1-3) and Tucson (February 5-7).

‘From bold gemstones to intricate craftsmanship, our designers bring
rubies to life in ways that inspire and captivate,’ said the duo.

Anthony Lent, Fannie Thomas, Heather Guidero, Jake Matluck, Amali, Karin Jacobson, Marian Maurer and Ciara Bowles are some of
the exhibiting designers who work with rubies.

  25. The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and
shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.

Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and dining the nation’s political
elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.

It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas had even started, when he was boss of the
    comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.

And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to
an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.

The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister
and John Howard lose his own seat.

The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of
the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s privileges,
although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their
    terms as PM.

But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed
a politically charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat
    was out of the bag.

The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government –
did not deter his party from romping in on election day.

In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that
of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

The exclusive Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (above) has been a well-kept secret
for years, but it exploded into the public conscience in 2007 as the result of a political furore

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge
member since 2002 during a row before the 2007
election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about the
    VIP club

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve
Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.

In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is
a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded
    normal Qantas Club.

‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret
    Jackson.

    ‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’

In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was
    also a member of lounge.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness
to the remark Price said Garrett had made.

Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers,
and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive
    membership of around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place, but which exposed him to criticism over his
own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

Back in 2007, Alan Joyce (left) was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline Jetstar, and then Qantas
CEO Geoff Dixon (right) had the power over who made the cut to the Chairman’s Lounge

One observer has described the relationship bet6ween leading politicians such as PM Anthony Albanese and the former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce (above) as ‘alarmingly cosy’

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is
supposedly to enable our elite politicians and business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at
    the time.

‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about
discretion and confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a
    confidence’.

The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s
    hushed confines.

Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have to be
personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.

‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega
rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff
who will be travelling cattle class.

‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have included Pauline Hanson.

‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a prolonged exposure
to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight years on fraud and bribery offences).

Membership of the elite lounge is confined to
about 6000 Australians including politicians from both sides,
senior public servants, TV stars and actors

The ‘scandal’ currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their
son Nathan could bring down the prime minister (above
the PM with partner Jodie Haydon and ex-Qantas CEO Alan Joyce)

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of
their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that
year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.

Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle
of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.

Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson  told Nine:
‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’

Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very
high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.

They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston,
which has stirred up the controversy.

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest
registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of
the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all
his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.

At a press conference this week, he repeated that
all of his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’

Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and
    all 12 assistant ministers.

PM Anthony Albanese and every member of his 22-person Cabinet,
his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers are members of the exclusive Chairman’s Lounge

Entry to the country’s six opulent VIP clubs are suitably discreet,
but once inside, the designer lounges offer free à la carte fine dining, table service and a discreet army of dedicated
    lounge attendants

On the Coalition side of parliament, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, deputy leader David Littleproud and
former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also among the swathes of politicians who have disclosed
they have taken up free membership to the contentious
    club.

Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a member
and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.

Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and
Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and
some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite
    regulating the airline.

Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to
    Beijing, Scott Dewar.

Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include
numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent
flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.

Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

The new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston (above) has stirred up the controversy

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities
and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo are members despite regulating the airline

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs –
in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports
    – are suitably discreet.

Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious,
with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent
selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.

Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the
    ‘Beyond’ lounge.

Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s
Lounge in the wake of the furore.

The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock and
former Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.

Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against Corruption and a
director of the Centre for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to
    follow suit.

‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,
    ‘ he said.

‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the public.
Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a
    plane?’

It comes after Lady Gaga teased a new rock n’ roll track,
The Joker, in an Instagram video on Wednesday.

At the beginning of the teaser, Lady Gaga – whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta – wore
a short, red wig as well as a blue and white-patterned dress.

    sneakers.

The singer stood near the edge of a balcony outside as she gazed at the Louvre which was
    lit up at night.

As she began to walk away, Lady Gaga sang, ‘There’s always a joker in the pack, there’s always a
    lonely clown.’

The teaser then cut to the songstress dancing inside the dimly lit museum as she
began to make her way down concrete steps – similar to Joaquin Phoenix’s stair dance
    scene in Joker (2019).

She walked down a long, dark hallway while surrounded by various paintings as the star continued
to belt out lyrics in the background.

‘The poor laughing fool falls on his back and everyone laughs when he’s down/ There’s always a funny man in the game,
but he’s only funny by mistake.’

The A Star Is Born actress then strolled into
another empty room inside the Louvre and a small smile broke out onto her face upon seeing a certain piece of artwork.

‘And everyone laughs at him just the same. They don’t see his
lonely heartbreak,’ she continued to sing.

‘They don’t care as long as there is a jester, just a fool.
As foolish as he can be. There’s always a joker, that’s the rule!
But fate deals the hand that I see. The joker is me,’ the lyrics in the teaser also included.

Lady Gaga began to walk away and looked over shoulder to take one
last look at the artwork, and revealed Harley Quinn
    makeup on her face.

She tossed her arms up into the air as she danced
her way out of the abandoned Louvre Museum as the reel came to an end.

In conclusion, text on the screen revealed that an exhibition at the Louvre called Figures of the Fool will begin next month
    on October 16.

According to the official website, the museum is ‘dedicating an unprecedented exhibition to the myriad
figures of the fool, which permeated the pictorial landscape

In the caption of the post, the performer wrote to her followers, ‘There’s always a Joker.

Answer: The one hundred meter dash.

  29. LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice
analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it
aims for more than two thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by
2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the
    shift to healthier alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May 2024
next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across
a host of key U.S. states ahead of the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from
    2025, he continued.

“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune
    its approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies, said in a
note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was
no longer a priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues
to come from sales of such products by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had
been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating outside of
    nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including
for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS
    and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS
    ILUMA, executives said.

    PMI shares were up 1.5% on Thursday. (Reporting by Emma Rumney in London and Granth Vanaik in Bengaluru;

  33. Oct 22 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International’s
(PMI) shares hit record highs on Tuesday after the cigarette maker raised its annual profit forecast and beat third-quarter estimates thanks to higher prices and
strong demand for its smoking alternatives.

PMI has invested billions of dollars in developing substitutes for cigarettes
as health-conscious consumers switch to smoking
alternatives in some markets, including its IQOS heated tobacco device and ZYN nicotine pouches, which are now a key focus for investors.

U.S. ZYN shipments in the quarter grew 41.4% over the prior-year period, rebounding after supply constraints curtailed rapid growth.
The Marlboro maker has been investing to expand
production capacity for ZYN, in an effort to meet
    strong demand.

The company’s flagship heated tobacco device, IQOS, also saw strong growth in regions such as Japan, Europe
and Indonesia, reassuring investors after volumes lagged expectations
    in the past.

“We delivered exceptionally strong performance, with record quarterly net revenues and earnings per share,” said Chief Executive Officer Jacek Olczak, adding IQOS growth had also accelerated.

PMI’s shares rose 9%, and remained almost 8% higher at
11.43 a.m. (1543 GMT) in New York trading.

The company also enjoyed higher shipment volumes
for cigarettes, with higher pricing also driving a 5.2% increase in revenues from its
    combustible tobacco business.

PMI raised its forecast for 2024 adjusted earnings per share, excluding currency, to between $6.85 and
$6.91, compared with its prior range of $6.67 to $6.79.

It reported revenue of $9.91 billion for the third quarter, versus analysts’ estimates of $9.69 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Its quarterly adjusted profit of $1.91 per share also beat estimates of $1.82 per share.

Last week, Philip Morris said it, along with peers British American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco, would pay C$32.5 billion ($23.6 billion) to settle long-running health-related lawsuits in Canada.

  34. By Emma Rumney

LONDON, Sept 27 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International has registered new lobbyists in at least
19 U.S. states this year, and plans to add some in four more in the next two weeks, according to
a Reuters’ review of public records and information provided by the company.

The world’s biggest cigarette maker by market value is expanding its lobbying firepower as
it gears up to launch its flagship IQOS heated tobacco device in a long-awaited entry to the United States, where vaping is
already an established alternative to smoking.

State-level lobbying registers examined by Reuters showed
that in at least three states – Georgia, Colorado and
Oregon – disclosures specified that the lobbying activity would focus on heated tobacco products.

Elsewhere, the filings referenced broader topics including tobacco
policy, taxation and business, and commerce.

IQOS heats up packets of ground tobacco but does not burn them, a process the
company says potentially results in fewer health risks than traditional smoking.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorised PMI to
market IQOS as offering reduced exposure to
    harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes.

PMI was spun off from U.S. cigarette giant Altria in 2008.
It had not sold any products in the United States until the purchase of oral nicotine company
Swedish Match in 2022. As a result, until this year its U.S.

    lobbying had been negligible.

PMI is trying to transform its image from a purveyor of cigarettes to a driving force behind
    the switch to healthier alternatives.

The company poured most of its $10.7 billion investment in what the industry refers to as “reduced risk” products
between 2008 and 2022 into the development of IQOS.

IQOS’ success in United States could be significant because of the market’s
size, said Sean King, research analyst at Colombia
Threadneedle Investments, a top 20 PMI investor. He said the U.S.
non-combustible industry accounts for a little over half of the global market.

PMI believes IQOS can win a 10% share of U.S.
tobacco and heated tobacco unit volume by 2030.

Investors are closely watching which states PMI
will select to launch IQOS first. Any it chooses will
likely to be the focus of PMI’s strategy for years to come, given its slow and
steady approach in other countries of launching IQOS in major
cities and then building out from there.

“It’s going to be a multi-year process within some of these states… before they progress toward a national launch,”
    King said.

Corey Henry, PMI’s director of U.S. communications, said the company is expanding its government affairs capability across the U.S.
as part of the normal course of business. PMI’s lobbying could relate to its Swedish Match business or more general engagement around smoking rates, Henry said.

PMI also plans to add lobbying capacity in four more states within the next two
weeks, he said, meaning its overall lobbying efforts span states where the vast majority of smokers – and the
    U.S. population – reside.

“Viewing PMI’s work across all regions of the U.S. strictly through the lens of potential launch geographies for our electrically heated tobacco system is incorrect,” he said.

The publicly available lobbying registries showed that PMI
has hired more than a dozen firms or individuals, some with high-level connections in legislatures including in Florida, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

The high-level lobbyists include Park Strategies LLC
in New York, a firm founded by former U.S.
Senator Alfonse M. D’Amato, as well as Daniel Hodge, former chief of staff
to Governor Greg Abbott in Texas.

Park Strategies and Hodge did not respond to requests for comment.

    COMPETITIVE MARKET

    Euromonitor International, a London-based market
research company, valued U.S. nicotine sales, excluding nicotine replacement therapies, at some $143.6 billion last year.

While cigarettes accounted for the vast majority of that, Euromonitor forecasts their
value will shrink by 30% by 2027. The value of vapes, heated tobacco
products and other alternatives will rise by 36% over the same period, it says.

Some rival heated tobacco products have
struggled in the U.S. market, where vaping and other alternatives are already well established.

After initially test launching a heated tobacco product in the United States,
British American Tobacco said it would instead focus its efforts on these more established categories.

Gaurav Jain, a director of equity research at Barclays, said PMI
has to prove IQOS will work in the United States after it
struggled in other markets with similar dynamics.

“It will be a much more competitive market,” he said.

PMI’s Henry said the company estimates 19.4 million adults around the world have switched to IQOS and stopped smoking,
and it is confident it can replicate its international success in the United States.

PMI is likely weighing a variety of factors – including smoking rates,
openness to innovation and income levels – as
it selects states for IQOS’ launch, according to Brett
Cooper, managing partner and analyst at Consumer Edge, an equity research firm.

IQOS has a relatively high cost compared to vapes or oral tobacco,
which could put off some price-sensitive consumers. For instance, the device costs between 39 pounds ($47.38) and 109
pounds in the United Kingdom, according to its website.

Users must also repeatedly buy the tobacco packets, which resemble small cigarettes,
    for it to heat.

But it will appeal to those looking for
a more similar experience to smoking, especially if PMI can make it relatively cheap compared to heavily taxed cigarettes, Cooper said.

IQOS has a key advantage in that regard: the device and accompanying tobacco
sticks are among only a handful of products to have been awarded “modified risk tobacco product” (MRTP)
status from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, alongside some oral tobacco products and
    some low-nicotine cigarettes.

In some states like Colorado and Washington – where
PMI registered lobbyists in February, March and
September – products with an MRTP designation are already taxed at
a lower rate than traditional cigarettes.

The FDA has sought to crack down on flavoured vapes,
in particular, amid concerns around youth usage. Disposable vapes, often in sweet flavours, rapidly came to account for a significant portion of U.S.

  35. Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International on Thursday said it would be filing a
premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) in the United
States for its IQOS ILUMA product in October.

The company at its investor day said that while the PMTA timeline remains “hard to predict”,
it expects the launch of the ILUMA heated tobacco units towards the
second half of its three-year forecast period of 2024 to 2026.

IQOS heats up packets of ground tobacco but does not burn them, a process the company says potentially results
in fewer health risks than traditional smoking

A PMTA is required to sell new tobacco products in the United
States, with manufacturers required to provide scientific data demonstrating a product is appropriate for the protection of public health.

  39. Pairing wine and cheese can seem overwhelming, and something only a trained
professional should do. There are endless varieties of cheeses and wines
to choose from, but if broken down into a few steps, it can be easier.
First, separate the wines into three categories: red, white,
and sweet-dessert wines. For cheese, you can begin with the source: cow,
goat, or sheep. Then select the sharpness: mild,
medium, or robust. Here are 10 perfect wine & cheese pairs to get you started.

    Riesling and Young Gouda Cheese

Rieslings give off the scent of peaches, plums, and cherries.
This white wine has a lighter body than Chardonnay. When paired with
young Gouda cheese brands, the flavors combine and become
sweet with a soft bite or tartness.

    Chardonnay and Mild Cheddar Cheese

Chardonnay is one of the most popular wines in the world.
Fermented plump-green grapes and oak barrels give it its buttery mouth feel.
The fruitiness and crispness of the medium-body Chardonnay makes it pair perfectly with
    mild cheeses.

Made from cow’s milk, the creaminess of young cheddar cheese enhances the pear and apple notes of this white wine.
Chardonnay is one of the most popular wines in the world.

    Sauvignon Blanc and Monterey Jack

Monterey Jack or Jack cheese is a mild, young cow’s milk cheese.
Due to its subtle flavors, it does not mask the Sauvignon Blanc,
which is a citrusy, bright white wine. This low alcohol wine gives off a soft earthy-grassy aroma.

    Pinot Grigio and Fresh Mozzarella

Pinot Grigio is a light refreshing white wine. It has the bright taste of sweet melons and tart pears.
It is a cleansing wine, and clears the palate. It pairs
well with mild cheeses. Aged or sharp cheeses
    would simply overpower it.

Fresh mozzarella blends smoothly with Pinot Grigio.
It is stored in a water bath of brine or whey. This allows the soft cheese to retain its creamy and milky flavor.
It is easy to make mozzarella at home, and it only
takes four ingredients. See the recipe and instruction here
at How to Make Fresh Mozzarella Cheese at Home.

    Gewurztraminer and Chevre

A product of France, Gewurztraminer is a sweet white wine, which
curiously enough gives off the scent of the tropical Asian lychee fruit.
This soft, aromatic wine burst with flavor when paired
with the earthiness of Chevre. Chevre is goat cheese and taste much different then cheese made with cow’s milk.

    Zinfandel and Muenster

A thick dark jam swirled together with black pepper describes this medium to full-body red wine, Zinfandel.
Muenster is mild, almost bland, and is soft on the
palate. The smoothness of this cow cheese will not overpower
the spiciness of Zins, but rather compliment it.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Extra Sharp Cheeses

Cabernets are very dry and deep red wines. Known for their velvety richness and full body, Cabs are acidic and have tannins.
Because of the strong flavors, they pair well with a cheese that competes equally in strong
    tastes.

Aged cheese, such as extra sharp cheddar, pair well with this high
alcohol beverage. Gorgonzola, a salty blue cheese, is a good complement.
Roquefort is a well-known, readily available tangy blue cheese that works well also.
See The Blue List for a complete list of blue cheeses.

    Merlot and Aged Gouda

Another dry red wine, Merlot is different from Cabernet
Sauvignon. Merlots are medium to full-body and a little softer than cabs, and have less tannin. Merlots have strong hints of ripe black cherries, plums and black tea.
Herbs naturally bring out the fruitiness.

Ages Gouda is very firm and cuts neatly into small squares.

It is sharp and stands up to richer dark red
wines. Theses aged cheese pulls out the unique black tea flavor from the Merlot.

    Pinot Noir and Gruyere

Pinot Noir is a light-medium red wine and not a dark as Merlots
and Cabs. Pinot Noir wine has a fruity jam flavor, like raspberries and strawberries.
Gruyere is an aged cheese that tastes nutty with a
hint of saltiness. It does not overpower the palate and brings out the ripeness of the Pinot Noir.

    Port and Stilton

Port is sweet, red dessert wine. It does not have the tannins and acidity of
other reds. Port is a fortified with the liquor Brandy. Once combined, the Brandy prevents the grapes from converting to more alcohol and keeps the wine ‘youthful’.

Stilton is a strong blue cheese. The tastes of the sweet
Port mixed with the robust, salty Stilton makes for a very intense pairing.
Serve this dish in small bite-size portions with a small but hearty glass of port.
It can be overwhelming in large quantities.

    Conclusion

The secret to creating tasty and interesting wine and food pairing is the bolder rich
red wines go with cheese that is just as bold.
Think well-aged cheese or blue cheeses for Cabs, Merlots, and Pinot Noir.
Sweeter wines, such as a Port, also work with aged, salty cheese.

For a list and comparison of more red wines, visit The Seven Most Popular Types of Red
    Wine.

White wines pair with younger cheese, such as mild cheddar and mozzarella.
Stronger cheese will destroy the subtle fruits,
herbs, and earthy aromas of Chardonnays and Pinot Grigio,
but do not be afraid to try new combinations. Sometimes what you think will not taste good together, starts a completely new trend in the wine and cheese-pairing world.

  40. ‘Tis the season for decadence and a touch of sparkle – and what better way to bring festive cheer
than a fridge full of fizz for parties and impromptu gatherings?

Champagne is admittedly my bubbly of choice – I love
both poised, elegant styles with brisk acidity and the richer, pastry-like, gastronomic pours.
But with Christmas all about sharing, toasting, and big get-togethers, stocking up is essential.

Consumer group Which? has named Tesco Finest Premier Cru Brut Champagne
the best Christmas fizz, outclassing Moët & Chandon’s Brut Impérial.

The supermarket fizz costs just £25 a bottle, but many popular Champagnes are priced over £40.

With that in mind, I’m sharing my secrets for sparkling swaps that keep both the palate
    and the wallet happy.

    Bollinger Champagne, £58

Swap for? Langlois Crémant Brut Réserve NV, £15.95

    Saving: £42.05 a bottle

For Bolly bling without the sting, head to the Loire Valley, where the Bollinger
family crafts this Crémant using the same traditional method as their Champagnes.

Made primarily from Chenin Blanc, which thrives
in the Loire, it undergoes 24 months of aging,
delivering a Crémant with depth that offers a charming twist on Bollinger’s rich Champagne style – with
    change to spare.

    Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne, £280

Swap for? Roederer Estate Quartet NV, £32

    Saving: £248 a bottle

Renowned producer Louis Roederer is the name behind the iconic Cristal Champagne
    – a prized choice among celebrities, especially when served in a flashy jeroboam, complete with sparklers in the ‘VIP section’ of nightclubs.
But if the £270 price tag brings tears to your eyes,
try Cristal’s Californian cousin, Quartet. Crafted in the cool Anderson Valley,
it offers a taste of luxury for almost a tenth of the cost.

    Laurent Perrier Rosé Champagne, £80

Swap for? Morrisons The Best Crémant De Limoux Rosé NV, £12.50

    Saving: £67.50 a bottle

If you’re after something pink, grab this super chic Crémant de Limoux from Morrisons – delivering
luxe for less. With a delicate effervescence and notes
of strawberries and cream, it hints at pink Champagne at five
times the price. And here’s a little-known fact: legend has
it that the art of fizz was first discovered
in Limoux, in the South of France – though our friends in Champagne may disagree.

    Ace of Spades Champagne, £315

Swap for? Segura Viudas Brut Vintage Premium Cava,
    £12

    Saving:  £303 a bottle

For showstopping-style on a shoestring, skip Harrods, forget Jay-Z’s red-carpet-ready ‘Ace of Spades’ and head to Sainsbury’s for Segura Viudas premium cava, complete with a shield that’s delightfully
close to a spade. For the price of one bottle of that Champagne, you could bag 26 bottles of this classy cava – and, honestly, after a few glasses, who’s noticing
    the difference?

Swap for? Fortnum’s Franca Contea Franciacorta Brut
    NV, £26.50

‘Blanc de Blancs’ meaning ‘white of whites’ is the name for bubbles made solely
from white grapes – typically Chardonnay in Champagne, delivering elegance
and finesse, à la Ruinart. Prices have crept up as Blanc
de Blancs become all the rage, but hop over the border
to the hidden gem of Franciacorta in Lombardy, northern Italy, and you’ll find complex, vinous sips with plenty of flair,
    like this Fortnum’s pick.

Swap for? Graham Beck Selection Sparkling Wine, £13.50

    Saving:  £41.50 a bottle

wine. And you’ll save a few quid compared to other politician favourites, like
    Pol Roger.

brunch, canapés, and a refreshing post-turkey sip. It’s worth mentioning that the Premier Cru label at £21.99
is a real step up and fantastic value too.

    Moët & Chandon Champagne, £44

Swap for? Chandon Brut Argentina, £23

    Saving: £21 a bottle
