У них есть немного времени, и они заходят в музей на выставку фламандских мастеров. Мать Тео – искусствовед, ей хочется взглянуть на некоторые очень ценные картины и рассказать о них Тео. В музее он обращает внимания на девочку со стариком и пытается не потерять девочку в толпе. Но тут происходит взрыв. Контузия, химическая вонь, вокруг мёртвые тела и разруха. Тео оказывается рядом с тем самым стариком. Старик умирает и говорит какие-то бессмысленные на первый взгляд вещи. Он отдаёт Тео свое кольцо и просит его взять картину, валяющуюся на полу – Щегла работы Фабрициуса, из картин которого осталось всего около десятка, и эта самая известная. Ошарашенный Тео, как во сне, берет картину и кольцо, выбирается из музея и идёт домой, все ещё надеясь, что мама ждёт его там. Но она больше не вернётся. Тео будет швырять по свету и по семьям, а картина станет его “судьбоносным предметом”, как говорит один из героев книги. И не только его, как оказалось.
“С картиной я чувствовал себя не таким смертным, не таким заурядным. Картина была мне опорой и оправданием, поддержкой и сутью. Краеугольным камнем, на котором держался целый собор. И до чего жутко было узнать, когда она вот так вдруг от меня ускользнула, что моя взрослая жизнь подпитывалась огромной, подспудной, первобытной радостью — убеждением, что вся эта жизнь уравновешена одной тайной, которая в любой момент может ее разметать.”

В кино также будут Николь Кидман (миссис Барбур), Сара Полсон (Ксандра) и Люк Уилсон (Ларри, отец Тео). Китси играет Уилла Фитцджеральд (очень милая в “Маленьких женщинах”), а Пиппу – Эшли Каммингс.
