Thanks a lot for the blog. Thanks Again. Fantastic.

US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best
to Aussies as the opening theme to the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim.
The song, originally written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1964 stage
musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint – The Smell Of The Crowd, is performed
by Gaga for her film Joker: Folie à Deux.
To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung by Gina Riley, who also plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’ Craig (née Day) in the legendary comedy.
Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop culture, thanks to
Gina’s rendition, the song had been covered by the likes
of Shirley Bassey in 1968 and Sammy Davis Jr
in 1965.
And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at the track – with the results markedly different to the brassy feel
of the Kath & Kim version.
Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is a much more
stripped back that builds to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.
Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.
‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,’ Pete, who play’s Kim’s
on-again-off-again husband Brett in the series, said.

‘I said to Gaga, “If you want to do it, it’s up to you. I’m the fifth banana in this thing”.’
Peter went on to mention that he did have a favourite between the two renditions.
‘I believe the Gina Riley version, or the “Kim” version, is the
better version.’
The Today Show posted a short clip featuring the Gaga’s version over the
Kath and Kim title sequence to Instagram and viewers were quick to issue their shock at the surprising cover version.

While some were quick to point out Shirley Bassey’s famous version,
one fan said the song would always belong to Kath and Kim.
‘Who cares about Shirley it’s iconic because it’s the Kath and Kim theme song,’
they wrote.
‘I cannot take Gaga seriously with this song hahahaha.’
Another did not hold back in their criticism of the Poke Face singer with: ‘Totally sucks.
Another flop of an album from Gaga. She’ll probably ruin joker sequel too.’

Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up
store offering shoppers ‘incredible’ deals on clothing, homewares, food,

The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria to help

and kitchen knives from previous pop-up shops.
There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is
open until 3 November, and another in Boronia which
will remain open until Christmas – or until stock runs out.

TK Maxx – which has stores in New South Wales,
Victoria, Queensland and South Australia – is the answer to buying new clothes and shoes on a budget.

Beth Zazlan, from Queensland, recently found a gold
mine of clothing lines from Australian brands like Camilla and Marc, Acler, Bec+Bridge, Shona Joy,
Dion Lee, Zimmerman, and Acler.
‘I was there for a pillow but I ended up grabbing
some sparkly earrings from [American jewellery brand] Badgley Mischka,’ Beth
told FEMAIL.
TK Maxx sells old stock from previous seasons – and shoppers have described it as a ‘clearance treasure
hunt’.
Many have seen bags from Fendi, Dior, and
Bottega Venetta on sale.
Others have spotted Gucci and Versace sunglasses, Hugo Boss accessories, and Christopher Esber dresses.
Beth said, ‘I was truly blown away – so if you’re looking for a bargain, head there.’
A David Jones employee revealed in a comment that discounted items from stores that aren’t sold
are shipped to TK Maxx.
‘Tis the season for decadence and a touch of sparkle – and what better way to bring festive cheer than a fridge full of fizz for
parties and impromptu gatherings?
Champagne is admittedly my bubbly of choice – I love both poised, elegant styles with brisk
acidity and the richer, pastry-like, gastronomic pours.
But with Christmas all about sharing, toasting, and big get-togethers,
stocking up is essential.
Consumer group Which? has named Tesco Finest Premier Cru Brut Champagne the best Christmas fizz, outclassing Moët & Chandon’s Brut
Impérial. The supermarket fizz costs just £25 a bottle, but many popular Champagnes are priced over £40.
With that in mind, I’m sharing my secrets for sparkling swaps that keep both the palate and the wallet happy.
Bollinger Champagne, £58
Swap for? Langlois Crémant Brut Réserve NV, £15.95
Saving: £42.05 a bottle
For Bolly bling without the sting, head to the Loire Valley, where the Bollinger family
crafts this Crémant using the same traditional method as their Champagnes.
Made primarily from Chenin Blanc, which thrives in the Loire, it undergoes 24 months of aging, delivering
a Crémant with depth that offers a charming twist on Bollinger’s rich Champagne style –
with change to spare.
Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne, £280
Swap for? Roederer Estate Quartet NV, £32
Saving: £248 a bottle
Renowned producer Louis Roederer is the name behind the iconic Cristal Champagne – a prized choice
among celebrities, especially when served in a flashy jeroboam, complete with sparklers in the ‘VIP section’ of nightclubs.
But if the £270 price tag brings tears to your eyes, try Cristal’s
Californian cousin, Quartet. Crafted in the cool Anderson Valley, it offers a taste of luxury for almost a tenth of the cost.
Laurent Perrier Rosé Champagne, £80
Swap for? Morrisons The Best Crémant De Limoux Rosé NV, £12.50
Saving: £67.50 a bottle
If you’re after something pink, grab this super chic Crémant de Limoux from Morrisons – delivering luxe for less.
With a delicate effervescence and notes of strawberries and cream, it hints at pink Champagne at five times the price.
And here’s a little-known fact: legend has it that the art of fizz was first
discovered in Limoux, in the South of France – though
our friends in Champagne may disagree.
Ace of Spades Champagne, £315
Swap for? Segura Viudas Brut Vintage Premium Cava, £12
Saving: £303 a bottle
For showstopping-style on a shoestring, skip Harrods, forget Jay-Z’s red-carpet-ready ‘Ace of Spades’
and head to Sainsbury’s for Segura Viudas premium cava, complete
with a shield that’s delightfully close to a spade. For the price of one bottle of that Champagne, you could
bag 26 bottles of this classy cava – and, honestly, after a few glasses, who’s noticing the difference?
Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Champagne, £89
Swap for? Fortnum’s Franca Contea Franciacorta
Brut NV, £26.50
Saving: £62.50 a bottle
‘Blanc de Blancs’ meaning ‘white of whites’ is the name for bubbles made solely from white grapes –
typically Chardonnay in Champagne, delivering elegance and finesse, à la
Ruinart. Prices have crept up as Blanc de Blancs become all the rage, but hop over the border to the hidden gem of Franciacorta in Lombardy, northern Italy, and you’ll find complex, vinous sips with plenty of flair,
like this Fortnum’s pick.
Pol Roger Champagne, £55
Swap for? Graham Beck Selection Sparkling Wine, £13.50
Saving: £41.50 a bottle
I served these delicious South African bubbles at my wedding – quaffed
in record time, with nobody realising it wasn’t Champagne.
As well as my own big day, Graham Beck has made an appearance at state events for Nelson Mandela and
Barack Obama, earning it the title of ‘presidential pick’ for
sparkling wine. And you’ll save a few quid compared to other
politician favourites, like Pol Roger.
Mumm Champagne, £39
Swap for? Mumm Marlborough Brut Prestige, £25
Saving: £14 a bottle
From Marlborough, New Zealand’s premier region and home of top Brit sip, Sauvignon Blanc, comes a fresh take on fizz.
Blessed with sunshine and a cool climate, Marlborough produces wines that are vibrant and crisp.
Here, a blend of traditional Champagne varieties – Chardonnay,
Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier – offers an easy-drinking, bright
character, and a great value sub for Mumm’s beloved bubbles.
Veuve Clicquot Champagne, £48
Swap for? Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut NV, £14.99
Saving: £33.01 a bottle
First launched over a decade ago at £12.99,
Aldi has miraculously kept their best-selling Veuve Monsigny Champagne under
£15. For a sprightly, quaffable style, it’s unbeatable at that
price – perfect for Buck’s Fizz at Christmas Day brunch, canapés,
and a refreshing post-turkey sip. It’s worth mentioning that the Premier
Cru label at £21.99 is a real step up and fantastic
value too.
Moët & Chandon Champagne, £44
Swap for? Chandon Brut Argentina, £23
Saving: £21 a bottle
From Champagne giant Moët & Chandon, Chandon Brut is a Champagne-style bubbly from Mendoza, Argentina.
If you’re thinking Mendoza is known for its hot climate and big,
bold Malbec reds, think again – Chandon’s vineyards are
situated in the foothills of the Andes at over 1,000 metres,
where cooling influences help retain that desirable freshness in the grapes.

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are
few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who
used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of
table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs
in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty,
clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely
via camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post.
Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia
croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily,
glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and
charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides
whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study
in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently
saline, raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at just
under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there are few
better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.
But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
One taste is never enough.
About £200 per head. Caviar Kaspia, 1a Chesterfield Street, London W1;

In an early scene in “Smile 2,” the fictional pop superstar
Skye Riley is in her drug dealer’s apartment.
“Do you believe in weird stuff?” he asks her, between doing lines of coke.
You certainly will after this horror romp –
writer-director Parker Finn’s second movie that suddenly opens up the
franchise with the promises of multiple directions
in the future. Not for that drug dealer, though:
He soon smiles at her demonically as he repeatedly slams a 35-pound gym
weight into his head, making it hamburger.
“Smile 2” lands as unsettling grins are plastered on pumpkins
and politicians alike as we approach Halloween and Election Day, and the psychotic, overly made-up leads of
“Joker: Folie à Deux” have been putting
up a brave face at their terrible box-office numbers.
So it’s the perfect time for a sequel to 2020’s “Smile,” which bridged the gap between elevated art horror and straight-out, unapologetic slasher.
Finn this time takes on fame, a better tonal fit than the generational trauma of the
first. It’s a meditation on breakdowns in the public eye, with a side dish of
body horror.
We start six days after the last movie but they
are barely connected – a single character for a few minutes – as we watch
a demon that forces its victims to smile before meeting a gruesome end working
its way into the low-level drug game.
The evil entity will eventually glom onto our heroine, Skye,
a fictional Grammy-winning pop superstar akin to if Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus had a
baby. We meet her a year after a horrific car crash she was in that killed her famous boyfriend and left her with a Vicodin addiction and rumors about whether she had
anything to do with it. That drug dealer has now infected
Skye, but she has no idea what’s in store (or in score,
the terrific work of Cristobal Tapia de Veer).
This image released by Paramount Pictures shows Naomi Scott in a scene from “Smile 2.” (Paramount
Pictures via AP)
On thing to really beam about is leading lady Naomi Scott
going for it all-out, all snot, smeared blood and wide-eyed,
full on-fear. Scott manages to pour her humanity into the part – diva, whimpering,
defiant, strung out, panicked. She even sings on the soundtrack – songs
that are credible hits.
The smile demon collides with Skye as she’s about to
launch a comeback tour and the pressure is on. Finn is at his best here, mocking confessional TV interviews – a Drew Barrymore cameo, a nice touch
– full of self-work and apologies: “I let you down and I promise this will never happen again.” Her management demands
that she show up “smile and read from the teleprompter.”
Skye’s mom – on the payroll – is little help: “You need to stay hydrated,”
she tells her after Skye is clearly in torment.
Finn has become a much more assured filmmaker and uses
humor so well here, from nasty gangsters enjoying pumpkin Frappuccinos to our heroine Googling “Does vomit have DNA?” He’s still fond of jump-scares and blood spurting and
gross-out tricks, like a body dragged by a truck until it’s just a smear with entrails.
One delightful moment has Skye chased by demonic backup dancers, a Bob Fosse-meets-“Thriller” sequence.
Finn also has a ball putting his heroines into cringe-worthy situations.
In the first movie, a murdered cat got bundled into a kid´s birthday present.
In this one, it’s a impromptu speech in front of music industry types that goes horrifically off the rails.
He’s got a deeper target: How do we quiet those voices in our heads
that say we’re no good?
Finn’s script sometime lags as he searches for an ending for “Smile 2,” seemingly in two minds, before
basically delivering both, kicking up dream sequences and alternate timelines like
a squid pumping out ink to cover its tracks. Over two hours ends up being too long.
But he has found a great satirical target, given life to a
third film easily and showcased another
rising star to watch. That’s a reason to, well, smile about.
“Smile 2,” a Paramount Pictures release that lands in movie theaters
on Friday, is rated R for “strong bloody violent content, grisly images, language throughout and drug use.”
Running time: 127 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Celine Dion surprised fans by getting soaked with Gatorade on Sunday.
The 56-year-old singer — who recently blasted Donald Trump for using her songs at a
campaign rally without permission — had the orange sports drink poured on her during a surprise Sunday Night Football
intro appearance.
She referenced her song It’s All Coming Back to Me Now while discussing her ‘passion’ for the Dallas Cowboys and
Pittsburgh Steelers rivalry while rocking a Super Bowl XXX sweater.
‘I think my favorite thing about this game
is its power to connect who we are to who we were, to prove our most powerful memories, our most enduring loves can stay with us forever.
You know what I’m talking about, right?’ she said as her 1996 hit played.
‘Sometimes, some nights, it all just comes back,’ she added.
‘The love affair. Well, maybe not “love” the way I usually sing about it.
But still… work with me here.’

Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness entrepreneur
Liz Earle, is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with what
looks like a small sponge floating in murky water.
‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I don’t
entirely share.
(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’,
which is what’s used to ferment sweetened tea to make kombucha.
I don’t realise at the time, but this hideous thing takes weeks
to develop and is in fact a very generous gift.)
The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave
me Liz’s zip. At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother, she honestly
looks 20 years younger. Fans of her YouTube channel and her 170,000 Instagram followers will know how bright and smooth her skin is, but in person she is fizzing with energy, too.
Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time she
has somehow seemed to gain in vitality as I, nine
years her junior, have… well, deflated.

back in the 1990s when they were both beauty journalists
So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight weeks, morning to
night, to see just how much I, too, can turn back the clock.
I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground myself’
in a flower bed in my pyjamas like her, and even tape up my mouth à la Liz.
From my gut to my hormones, my brain to the very cells of my skin, I will follow
the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her new book A Better Second Half:
Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, which swiftly became a
bestseller on its release this year.
Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.
‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change the way we age?’ she asks.
‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my 50s than I was in my 40s, so why can’t
I be even more so in my 60s, 70s and beyond?’
Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash of
emotional wreckage’ caused by the breakdown of her second
marriage, and the divorce she went through in 2020,
she now says: ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at 40.’
Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s we were both
beauty journalists. At launches for new products,
I’d merrily down the free Krug while Liz sipped sparkling
water. ‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she says.
Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed… and I’m suffering major work anxiety, a not-unrelated financial crisis and severe sciatica.
Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and I have dark circles under my eyes.
Physical pain interferes with my sleep, and I’ve been turning
rather too readily to the sauvignon blanc to help me nod off.
Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving sugar, which means I’m
a good 10lb heavier than I should be.
So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as
young as she looks? More to the point – can I
really stick to it, kombucha and all?
‘Come on Bea, get off your backside!’ Liz demands…
Liz (left) puts Beatrice through her paces in the gym.
Beatrice needs extra help with exercise because of her sciatica
Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low carb, meaning she’s
a fan of lots of foods I love but didn’t
think I should eat: butter, unprocessed meat, avocados, good quality
cheese, taramasalata and thick Greek yoghurt.
High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape, and lose that middle-aged spread,’ she says.
Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch around 11am and dinner at 7pm.
The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice, because eating protein before carbs keeps blood sugar levels
stable.
In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before 2pm) because studies show four to five cups is ‘strongly
associated with living longer’ thanks to the bioactives in coffee beans such as chlorogenic acid.
She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her intake
of spermidine – a dietary molecule that interacts with our DNA and
mimics an anti-ageing process called autophagy, which de-ages us at a cellular level.
Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine or tequila, but never more than two and never
alone.
I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves and start cooking from
scratch. I grill venison, roast a chicken and make soups
with the leftovers.
Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first thing – and enjoying the
protein part of each meal first means I’m fuller and find it easy to cut back on my carb portions.
Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented foods.
Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start to brew my own using
Liz’s Scoby. But homemade kimchi – fermented veg – is
a harder sell. When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself to eat something I dislike so much, I
reply solemnly: ‘Liz told me to.’
Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means my normal routine has gone to pot.
Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day of exercises such as squats,
lunges and press-ups is more valuable in the long term than a high-intensity gym session once a week or a
long park run.
She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, who delivers the
(bombshell, but welcome) news that running any distance
over 5k can ‘start to have negative effects’ on our immune system and bone strength.
If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding up your time,
not increasing your distance.
At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about my sciatica,
and then he devises a daily regime for me.
I try press-ups and make it to three. Mortifying. Perseverance is clearly
key. As are weights, especially in your 50s. ‘The more muscle
you have, the more your bones are protected from osteoporosis, especially during midlife,’ says Michael.
For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a week.
But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps
For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses
and hammer curls, with 3kg weights in both hands.
I try tricep dips off a chair, and quickly find I can increase
my reps – until by week four I’m doing two sets of 15.
I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine takes 40 minutes but the more I do,
the faster I do it, until the whole thing – stretching, press-ups,
weights – takes just 20 minutes.
For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead
of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps.
Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how
I feel, which is sluggish and foggy.
Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’ – the specific collection of bacteria in the gut that influences how our body uses oestrogen. Put
simply, some microbes improve the efficiency with which oestrogen reaches
tissues around the body, meaning we use our dwindling supplies more effectively.
The best way to support your estrobolome is by eating fibre from veg, seeds and
nuts, plus some of the low-sugar fruits such as apples, berries and
plums. Back to the supermarket I go.
To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my saintly
mentor insists I finish my morning shower with a minimum 60-second blast of icy
cold water, resulting – she claims – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.
Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a
hot shower and feel not happy but mutinous as I step out of the bathroom shivering.
Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning and standing barefoot on the grass.
‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the surface of the Earth to transmit deep
into the body, ‘where they have an anti-inflammatory effect’.
Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her glorious pile in the West Country.
I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas,
and feel, well, very self-conscious. Later I graduate to the
park, and – look away now – tread in dog mess, which does not improve my emotional
wellbeing.
She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude
Journal twice a day. ‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports
the immune system,’ she says.
I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a lot more to smile about
than me but, following instructions, I write down three
things I am grateful for every morning, and every night a short list of ‘good things’ that happened that day, plus another (longer) list of ‘things that are concerning me’.
My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I find it does make me realise what’s important and what’s not.
It helps me see that things are a lot brighter than I
thought. Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t
find my journal and am surprised by how bereft
I feel without it.
Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and end up hitting my snooze button past 8.30am…
and occasionally edging towards 10am.
Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they follow her routine, which means setting an evening
alarm for 9pm – to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.
Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by a printed book or a
podcast. She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky
drink half an hour before bed (and stops eating two hours before).
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning
Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because
she sleeps with an open window, which she covers with
blackout blinds and curtains, and sprinkles her pillow with a few
drops of neat lavender essential oil.
I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this routine.
Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy a regular alarm clock.
The lavender oil makes me sneeze, so I spray my pillows
with C. Atherley Geranium Spray instead.
Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me how when she delivers the kombucha.
Forcing yourself to breathe through your nose is said to promote more restful sleep.
All of this is time-consuming and takes practise,
but I find the ritual soothing. Five weeks in, I’m getting
to sleep earlier than I have for years – at 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off time -and waking at
7.30am. How virtuous!
Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend
who chirpily suggests a glass of wine, which turns into a bottle.
And then a second. Later, with a daytime hangover,
I head to M&S and find reduced dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner.
Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo (£289 for two
months – you jab a biosensor the size and shape of a plastic bottle top into
your upper arm, and then link it to an app on your phone), which shows a massive post-potato spike and then a
huge slump, which makes me tired and irritable. Who knew that such deliciousness had such a high glycaemic load?
I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I lie
in, eat too much cake and drink too much tequila,’ she says.
‘But that’s fine because you then know what to do to put it right.
It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!
Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here.
By documenting what I was so worried about day by day,
my perspective on it changes.
Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt at the start of this project and
how I’ve evolved.
I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s
been easy because change is uncomfortable, but I realise there’s
simply nothing to be gained from the worry spiral.
If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something about it.
Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action, I apply for part-time admin jobs.
As personal trainer Michael observes as we work out on Zoom,
I wouldn’t have done this before. He’s right. Finally I’ve started to take control.
Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?
Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and taken an extraordinary 5 in off my waist and 11
in off my body as a whole.
Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping 40 per workout, and the measly 3kg
weights are now 6kg, meaning I have proper bicep definition. The sleeveless tops will be coming
out again this party season.

Our essential guide to beating back pain: What’s causing your aches
My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more defined because I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat.
I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely less
anxious.
Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica is almost gone and I can come off
strong painkillers. I know sciatica can disappear of its own accord, but the timing
is surely no coincidence. All those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my spine and buttocks and I’m convinced it’s done the trick.
I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see
a difference. ‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good
look at her pupil. ‘Those arms! You definitely look younger.’
We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content and optimistic.
You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’
Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she? (Probably.
Though Liz is known for her candour, so
it’s not a given.) ‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself enough and commit,
‘ she admits ‘You weren’t an easy nut to crack so I’m thrilled.’
I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to her, which is one of the key lessons I’ve
learned. Gratitude makes everything feel better.
That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have learned to love) and the odd tequila – are the
habits I’ll hold on to. But not (shudder!) the kimchi or flower beds.
As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second
half – and if I can do it, anyone can.

And while the name is a stroke of clever ingenuity,
the film itself might leave audiences feeling more bewildered than entertained.
The new flick has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as it

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during
the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the

The ‘bleak’ sequel, has also received a tepid reception from fans, with some claiming Lady Gaga’s career could be at risk.
While the same director Todd Phillips was back in the hot
seat, critics have said the sequel is just a ‘repeat’ of the first
hit but with an added musical twist.
Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and claimed
she was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.
While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t live up to expectations, others have dubbed
the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’
Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it
lacked any thrill.
The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered as one of
the most subversive and original films of the last decade, while
its hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its
predecessor’.
Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just
two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.
Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga
worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared
to have no idea what to do with her.
Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips
discussed whether he would be interested in making a third Joker film or a movie centered around Gaga’s character;
Phillips, Gaga and Phoenix seen in September in L.A.
Joker: Folie À Deux has been branded the ‘most disappointing follow-up to the Oscar-winning movie’ by critics, as they cast doubt on Lady Gaga’s
‘thin’ role in the film following its release on Friday; seen in September in London
The Times’ Kevin Maher wrote: ‘The director Todd Phillips said there would be no follow-up to the original, but he changed his mind and the result is a derivative musical’
‘This might be the most disappointing follow-up
to an Oscar-winning performance since Anthony
Hopkins reworked his silky and terrifying Dr Lecter from for the
campy, kitschy.’
Along with Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve
Coogan.
Joker: Folie à Deux has faced additional backlash from fans as they have claimed that Gaga is
running the risk of losing her acting career.

Joaquin Phoenix’s wife Rooney Mara blushed as he fixed
her dress on the red carpet at Academy Museum Gala in LA on Saturday.
For the star-studded affair located at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Rooney, 39, joined her dashing husband Joaquin, 49.
The couple – who ‘secretly wed’ recently – looked happier than ever as they posed for sweet snaps on the carpet.
Rooney looked out of this world as she slipped into
a floral sheer dress and flashed her underwear underneath.
The glitzy gala had no shortage of A-list star power as they were also joined by the likes of supermodel Kendall Jenner as well as fan-favorite actress and newly minted billionaire Selena Gomez.

Phoenix (born Bottom) and the two-time Oscar nominee are also parents of
four-year-old son River Mara Phoenix named after Joaquin’s
big brother who died, age 23, from an overdose of morphine
and cocaine on Halloween 1993.
‘I love it. I love it so much. I think it’s the best thing in the world,’ Rooney gushed of motherhood on the LaunchLeft Podcast last year.
‘It doesn’t feel like a two-actor house because I didn’t work for
the first three and a half years we were together.
Basically since we’ve been together, I only worked
one or two times and one was really small and short.
It feels like a creative household, we’re constantly talking about creative things.’

It also features Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey.
Thus far, Joker: Folie à Deux has a 60% critic approval rating (out of 58 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.
The 1981-set first film Joker made history in 2019 as the highest-grossing R-rated film of
all time, amassing $1.079B at the global box office despite mixed reviews.

She then jumps off the car before engaging in a savage fight with
another version of herself.
The next scene then cuts to her chained up in the dark wearing white underwear and covered in scars as she stands on top of yet another version of herself.
She then wraps her legs around the other Lady Gaga to try and strangle her as the tension intensifies.
The scary leather clad character from earlier is then seen vomiting black liquid

She is then seen trying to escape the chaos as

Lady Gaga fans beg her to do a global tour as singer prepares to release her seventh album
Meanwhile, it was recently claimed that Gaga has decided to delay her world tour until 2026.
Due to huge names, including Oasis and Coldplay, booking up multiple dates at stadiums across the UK, there

‘Her next album will be out in the new year and she

Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance in Joker: Folie à Deux, has described the new sequel as ‘terrible’ and ‘the worst
film ever made’.
The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix
as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley
Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office.
Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s
new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming.
Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the worst film
ever made.
‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels.
This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind of message.
Male rage! Nihilism! All these think pieces.

‘And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady
Gaga tap dancing to a point where it’s insane.’
He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these
other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to
one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is
the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love
with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office,
good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of
its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth,
in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was
‘100% as divisive as people are making it
out to be. I love that the film didn’t try
to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any
other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how
it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot
of fun.’

to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to
Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture
One user marvelled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal
hate despite being more interesting and creative than anything
marvel has done in years is expected.’
It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood of
negative reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract from the furore over the film, insiders claim.
Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just
under $40 million at the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.
Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel,
aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker – a role that won him the best actor
Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing
ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.
‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered,’
a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.
‘She put so much heart into the movie and
has so much respect for the DC comics fan base.’
They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking
at other projects they can roll out as they want to move on this from as quickly as
possible.’

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a second source claimed she is not letting it deter her
from returning to the big screen, with the singer said to
be eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.
‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,’ they said.
‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since the first film was such a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.
‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next
and final film. Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she wants
to audition.
‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script is presented,
it is a bucket list moment for her to be involved.’

Joker: Folie À Deux — starring Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix — may have bombed at
the box office, but the name behind the new flick is a perfect fit that nails its darkly playful tone.
Folie À Deux directly translates to madness for two.
The term means ‘the presence of the same or similar delusional ideas
in two persons closely associated with one another’, According to Merriam-Webster.
And while the name is a stroke of clever ingenuity, the film
itself might leave audiences feeling more bewildered than entertained.
The new flick has garnered the lowest CinemaScore
in comic book movie history as it bombed at the box office on opening night.

Joaquin reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which
had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while
Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley
Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest
score for a comic book movie at the time of writing.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher
score with a C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31 percent and a critic score of 33
percent.
The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at
the domestic box office during the entirety of opening
weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the
number has since drastically dropped.
Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters –
and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global
box office.

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips
– had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux
to around $200 million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th
Venice International Film Festival.
Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal
of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film
garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September,
where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per
Deadline.
However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and
shared their opinions on the sequel, which features musical sequences.
One fan penned, ‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this. what happened to the script?’
while another added, ‘is it that bad,’ followed by a crying face emoji.
‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well, could have been a good choice.
It’d show how much of an unreliable narrator Fleck is,’ one typed.
‘But with some original songs, that keep everything vague, not just covers.
Also when I heard of the ending I snorted fr.’
A social media user wrote, ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original wasn’t a musical.’
‘Maybe he [Phillips] only had an hour long movie, and
decided to randomly add musical scenes to fill the runtime,’ one penned.
‘Joker downfall really needs to be studied,’ another shared, along with a monkey

‘It also insults the audience’s intelligence. the songs were also underwhelming too.
they shouldn’t have let this escape to theaters.’
One shared, ‘The audience that loved the first
movie is not the same audience running to see musicals.
This was a gigantic mistake from step 1.’
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips discussed whether he would be interested in making a
third Joker film or a movie centered around Gaga’s character.
‘It’s not really where this movie is headed for me.
I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.’

It is length * width * height.
Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency
and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties
look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps
on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent
of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election –
actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations,
thus increasing the transparency of who makes
political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their
cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all
will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only
find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy
and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot
– saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort,
not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock
(right) said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need
to disclose having done so. And how much
they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them
a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support
of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly
before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping
out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major
parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by
Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens
and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive
Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens
leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the
scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations
rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile
from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the
way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving
everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the
laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond
Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the
unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the
Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these
proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition,
to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary
about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair
Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from
the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper
(especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair
Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a
traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple
colours. It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained
a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at
least three different Fair Isle designs.
Kensington Palace
Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung,
who recently layered a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over
a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky
Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last
year.
A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired
knits for AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.
If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck from Loro Piana
is a little out of your budget, there are countless options on the high street.
The cropped cardi from Hush certainly caught our
attention, as did the Fair Isle knit that was featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights
As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire,
each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme —
abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot
peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of
about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade
voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while they’re at
it, to vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions
imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”
Une pancarte barrée du slogan “L’indifférence aux élections est dangereuse”, à Tucson, en Arizona, le 16 octobre 2024
Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of
federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse
to treat them.
“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,”
she told AFP.
– ‘Abortion is murder’ –
As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote,
that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the
Supreme Court against abortion rights.
Donald Trump lors d’un meeting à Tempe, en Arizona, le 24 octobre
2024
“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez,
a 20-year-old college student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions,
he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during
the Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and
prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally
reserved to the border police who work for the federal government.
“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez
said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize
more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of the
two presidential campaigns.
Anti-abortion activists demonstrate outside a clinic in Phoenix, Arizona on April 18,
2024
But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the
White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona,
with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely
to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said
Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the
White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher
language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,”
said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise
to maintain the partial closing of the border
Biden ordered in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

The admiration was mutual between the stars as Joaquin plays Arthur Fleck
AKA The Joker and Gaga plays Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzil AKA Harley

Gaga told her co-star: ‘I think we transformed into our characters over a period of time and
we continued to hone in every kind of detail.’
The last time that actor Joaquin played The Joker, he had to
drop over forty pounds (three and a half stone).
He went on a diet of lettuce, asparagus and apples which he said made him
almost lose his mind.
Five years later he has returned to the Oscar-winning role again in Joker: Folie a Deux –
and says that he had to lose almost the same amount of weight once more, and is never doing it again.
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said: ‘I’m not going to talk through specifics of
the diet, because I just think nobody wants to hear that.
‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because
there was so much dance rehearsal that we were doing, which I didn’t have last time.
‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe. But you’re right, I’m now 49, I probably shouldn’t do this again. This
is probably it for me.’

The last time that actor Joaquin Phoenix played The Joker, Arthur Fleck, he had to drop three and a half stone – and he
has revealed he had to do so again
He added: ‘I know I was responsible last time for talking about it, but it’s difficult to do so.
‘That becomes your obsession because you’re working the entire time
to get to a certain weight.
‘So then you end up talking about it, and then it just
sounds like an actor going on and on about how much
weight they lost.
‘By the end of that run I was so sick of myself and angry at myself for making such a big deal about that part, because you just do what you’re ****ing supposed to do.
So this time I was like, ‘I’m not going to
do that’.’
He then whispered: ‘It was 47 pounds,’ before adding: ‘No, I’m joking.
I don’t know.’
Co star Lady Gaga, who plays a music therapist at Arkham Asylum,
said: ‘We rehearsed the waltz in the film for two months which kind of falls apart.
‘When Joaquin was too hungry we fed him blueberries.’
Phoenix said: ‘Part of the joy for me was to take standards and find a way that was specific to the characters.
‘That was part of what was interesting for us. We started off with references like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr and we started to emulate that sound.’

also developed a ‘disorder’ over pounds (Seen left in the first

He added that his co-star Lady Gaga, real name Stephanie Germanotta ‘wanted to sing live and I did not.
In the end, every part of the recording was
live.’
Gaga said: ‘The way music is used is to give characters a way
to express themselves because the dialogue is not enough.’
She had to forget her professional training: ‘It was about unlearning technique and forgetting
how to breathe.’
Director Todd Phillips said that he felt the pressure after the
success of The Joker.
He said: ‘I’m more nervous of this one than the first one.
The first one we were under the radar, this one everyone was writing on the internet about it.’
The Warner Bros film is released on October 4th.
After the release of the first film, Joaquin shut down rumours he only
ate an apple a day to achieve his astonishing weight loss,
telling Access Hollywood that he consumed more food
than that — though not much more.
‘It wasn’t an apple a day. No, you’ve also got lettuce and
steamed green beans,’ he said of what he ate in preparation for the role.
The actor previously admitted that ‘you start to go mad
when you lose that amount of weight in that amount
of time’
While speaking with Access Hollywood, Joaquin explained he consulted with a doctor to ensure he lost weight as safely as possible
Although Joaquin has lost weight for roles before, he admitted that ‘Joker’ director Todd Phillips didn’t make
it easy on him.
The Her star recalled how the producer always had the one food item he craved on hand,
which made his diet a bit more of a struggle.
‘Todd did have these f*****g pretzels that I love.
And he’d just have bags of them in his office!’ he said.
‘And that was difficult.’
Joaquin’s character is wearyingly thin in the film, and he admitted that he
had reservations about taking on such a drastic weight loss.
‘It’s a horrible way to live,’ he told the New York Times.
‘I think [the Joker] should be kind of heavy.
Todd was like, ‘I think you should do the real thin person.”
Joaquin previously said his extreme diet helped him prepare for the role in more ways than one.
‘The first thing for us was the weight loss — I think that’s
really what I started with,’ he said of working with the film’s director.
‘And, as it turns out, that then affects your psychology.
You start to go mad when you lose that amount of weight in that amount of time.’

The country’s richest banker is spending almost $1million on renovations at his
palatial mansion – while pressing ahead with plans to slug everyday Australians $3 to access their
own cash.
Commonwealth Bank boss Matt Comyn came under fire for being completely out of touch after Daily Mail Australia
revealed how his bank was imposing a ‘grubby cash grab’ on customers
in the lead up to Christmas.
The bank this week buckled after widespread outrage and announced they will now delay the introduction of the controversial $3 withdrawal fee.
But it has so far resisted calls to scrap the charge entirely.
It comes amid ongoing criticism about Australia’s financial
executives paying themselves huge salaries while the rest of the country struggles with the cost-of-living crisis.
Mr Comyn, whose bank is the main financial institution for more than a third of the country, remains the highest-paid executive across Australia’s ‘big
four’ banks, earning about $9million last financial year, after taking
in more than $10.4million the year before.
But while his customers battle to make ends meet, Mr Comyn has
been spending up big on the long-running overhaul of his multi-million dollar sandstone mansion in Sydney’s affluent inner-east.
The bank boss initially estimated the extensive renovation works on his $9.5million pile – in a tree-lined enclave
in Sydney’s east – would set him back about $920,153, according to the development application he lodged with his local council.
CommBank boss Matt Comyn’s is pouring almost $1million into giving his historic home in Sydney’s
east a major facelift. The grounds surrounding the prized pile continue to undergo extensive landscaping
Mr Comyn has come under fire for being out of touch with consumers,
and raking in about $20million while the rest of the country struggles through
a cost-of-living crisis
But with the overhaul continuing to drag on for almost two years, there is
speculation that amount could well have blown out into more than seven figures.
Mr Comyn and his wife Lucy-Ellen have been toiling away on an upgrade across
all three levels of the mansion since November 2022 and have been adding ensuites to the prestigious home’s
four existing bedrooms, a ground floor rumpus and
extensive landscaping.
Workers were still busily mixing concrete at the ritzy address on Thursday morning as the
mansion remained encircled with cladding.
The couple snapped up the mansion for $3.3million when Mr Comyn was still the bank’s group
executive for retail banking services before both its value and his
paycheque skyrocketed.
The value of his home has already trebled and is expected to pass the
$10million-mark once all his ongoing works are finally completed.
The Commonwealth Bank initially planned to move customers from their Complete Access Account to a Smart Access Account which included a $3 fee when withdrawing
cash from a branch, post office or their phone from January
6.
After intense blowback, the bank said the change would be delayed by six months for customers who are ‘worse off
with the new fee’.
Mr Comyn’s mansion already boasted an impressive backyard before his
lengthy renovations

are still underway

Ally Langdon says what every Aussie is thinking about Commonwealth Bank’s fee backflip
The Albanese government slammed the move, with housing minister Clare O’Neil saying: ‘It doesn’t seem fair or appropriate and this is a huge bank making huge profits.
Come on, guys.’
‘It’s Christmas. We don’t need this right now,’ she said. ‘This is not something
the bank should be doing and we’re asking them to reconsider.’
Assistant treasurer and financial services minister Stephen Jones also hammered Mr Comyn’s bank over the fee, branding it a ‘slap
in the face’ for loyal customers and the ‘worst Christmas present imaginable’.
‘Commonwealth Bank has to rethink this terrible decision,’ he said.
‘This seems to be to a tax on Australians who demand the right to use
their cash.
‘And the government won’t stand for it. We’re working for Australians to ensure they can continue to use cash if
they so choose.’
North Queensland federal MP Bob Katter described the new charge as ‘an act defiance and contempt for the people of Australia’.
He said the bank was ‘counter-attacking’ against the recent announcement that businesses
selling essential goods and services such as groceries,
medicines and fuel will be forced to accept cash from their customers
unless granted a special exemption the start of 2026.
Sydney radio station 2GB drive host Chris O’Keefe was even more scathing,
labelling the cash grab as ‘beyond obscene’.
Housing minister Clare O’Neil has blasted the CommBank over its $3 withdrawal fee
The renovation was expected to cost about $940,000 to complete but that was two years ago
It is unclear when the lengthy overhaul will finally be completed
‘Charging a fee to access our own money is nothing more than a grubby little money grab,’ he said.
‘How much blood do they want from us?’
He could scarcely contain his disbelief at the bank’s claim the move ‘is all part of our effort to
give Australians the best banking experience’.
‘They have got to be joking,’ O’Keefe said. ‘Are these people for real?’
O’Keefe said customers assessing cash costs the financial
giant about $400 million a year but noted the bank made a whopping profit of almost $10billion last financial year after tax.
‘This is all about boosting the bottom line,’ O’Keefe said.
A Commonwealth Bank spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that it ‘continues to offer customers free cash withdrawals from
our national ATM network’.
They added that it would continue ‘to offer waivers on assisted withdrawal fees for
customers who meet certain criteria including certain types of pension recipients, those who deposit $2,000 a month, and those aged under-18.
2GB’s Chris O’Keefe, seen with wife Yvonne
Sampson, has been one of the fee’s leading critics
‘Our Streamline Basic account has no monthly account fees or assisted withdrawal fees and is available to customers who hold an eligible concession card.’
CommBank group executive of retail banking services Angus Sullivan said in a
statement on Wednesday the change had been ‘poorly communicated’ with the bank’s customers.
‘The changes taking place are such that approximately 90 percent of customers we intend to move, and who we expect will be better off or the
same, will be moved to the lower monthly fee account,’ he said.
‘If those customers don’t want to move, they can contact us to discuss their options.
‘For the remaining customers we are changing our approach and we are pausing the migration. Instead,
we will contact these customers over the next six months to
communicate about suitable product options.
‘The changes outlined above do not affect approximately nine-million CommBank customers who are not on the Complete Access product.
‘Commonwealth Bank maintains the largest branch network.
Each of our branches has fee free ATMs and we have a moratorium on regional branch closures
until at least the end of 2026.’

Joaquin Phoenix has revealed that he spoke with filmmaker Christopher Nolan about playing Joker which ultimately went to Heath Ledger.
The 50-year-old actor – whose latest flick Joker: Folie À Deux could
be streamed now – got candid about potentially playing the supervillain before he actually portrayed
him.
Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as he revealed that
he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan about
portraying Joker over a decade before.
He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for a number of reasons.
I wasn’t ready then.
‘That’s one of those things sometimes where you go: “Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. There’s another person that’s going to do something that’s like, I can’t imagine what it would be if we didn’t have Heath Ledger‘s performance in that film.”‘

Joker: Folie À Deux heading to streaming after box office flop
In 2020, Joaquin earned the Best Lead Actor Oscar for Todd Phillips directed Joker which was
11 years after Ledger posthumously earned Best Supporting
Actor for The Dark Knight in 2009.
Joaquin continued: ‘I don’t know whether Christopher Nolan was
coming to me saying, “You are definitely the person.”
‘I can’t remember the context of how we met.
But I know that we met, and my feeling was, “I shouldn’t do this.” But maybe he also was like, “You’re not the guy.” I couldn’t say.’
Heath died in a New York City apartment on January 22,
2008, after accidentally overdosing following months of physical and mental exhaustion.
The Dark Knight actor died aged 28 after taking a fatal cocktail of drugs,
leaving behind his daughter, who was two years old at the time.

Terrifier 3 dethrones Joker: Folie À Deux as box office champ
The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the
box office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters
— though Warner Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report,
saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders”
or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where
rumor is reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China,
and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.
In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three
days of release.
The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered a surefire
hit for Warner Bros Pictures, yet ended up being slammed by critics and failed to

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar
for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role
of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest
score for a comic book movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters
earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score
of 32%.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase –
with an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing
to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from
the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck,
mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios
logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel,
while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to
Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and
Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the
studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips
shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022
and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared:
‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere September

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed
back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully
supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared
in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have accepted Qantas Chairman’s Lounge
memberships as calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese over the
perks he took from the airline.
Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions show
commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by invite only
by the Qantas chair.
This has raised concerns over how impartial the body
would be when dealing with Qantas matters.
If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a new book,
he may have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial Code of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking ‘any kind of benefit’
Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge membership in 2023, as did the CEO
Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and Nicole Rose,
Sky News reported on Wednesday.
Deputy commissioners Ben Gauntlett and Kylie Kilgour declared
their membership in February 2024, which means it was after the NACC began operation in July 2023.

‘Each of the statutory office holders has made appropriate declarations in regards to Chairman’s lounge membership

‘Qantas is not a Commonwealth agency within the Commission’s jurisdiction.’
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and his deputy Sussan Ley have
said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the NACC over 22 upgrades and extra Chairman’s Lounge memberships received
from Qantas.
An insight into the type of service offered by the Chairman’s Lounges was offered by a job

The ad, placed by hotel group Accor that Qantas contracts to run the lounges, stated they were

The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking

Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades

The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership

Briton Matthew Smith, the partner of former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Michael Jeffries,
leaves court in Central Islip, New York on December 3, 2024
The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing line
pleaded not guilty Tuesday in US federal court to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.
Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer James Jacobson allegedly used a
“casting couch” ploy to groom aspiring male models to attend
sex parties at which victims were plied with alcohol
and drugs.
After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith was held in custody in New
York. Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip on Long Island, to the east of New York City.
Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up
by Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office
for the eastern district of New York.
An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse
with what appeared to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his ankle.

and March 2015 Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of “force, fraud and coercion” to traffic men in a sprawling prostitution enterprise.
Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors suggest the scale was probably much larger and have appealed for witnesses and victims to come forward.
Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries
and Smith and to hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.
Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.
Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as the other defendants and was released on half a
million dollars bond in October.

Adam Bandt said people ‘can make their own judgment’
about him enjoying an exclusive and discretionary perk from Qantas during a tense exchange with a journalist live on radio.
The Greens leader has been outed as a member of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered waiting areas
and services handed out by the airline in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.
Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host
Steve Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked hundreds
of workers’.
Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make their own judgement about what they
think about that.’
Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that
Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start of the Covid pandemic
in a case brought by Transport Workers Union.
Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day
for thousands of Qantas workers & their families’ in a Facebook post.
‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.
Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t
think you should be a little purer on this and just not
take their (Qantas’s) hospitality?’
Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such as this and argued
that the party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily show the perks were not impacting the Greens.

How Greens leader Adam Bandt spent thousands on private jet flights while lecturing YOU about climate change
Mr Bandt was spotted in September flying business class from Melbourne to Canberra seated next to
Senator Jacqui Lambie.
Albanese government ministers Tim Watts and Catherine King were on the
same flight but were with the masses in economy class.
It has been previously reported that Mr Bandt opts to frequently fly business despite his party’s
core policy of cutting C02 emissions.
Flying business class emits about three times as much carbon as economy class because the seats take up more room
and more of them are empty, according to a World Bank study.
Fellow Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather last year said
he had shunned a Chairman’s Lounge membership and refuses to travel business class.
Earlier this year Mr Bandt’s flying habits led to controversy.
Mr Bandt’s flying habits have been a previous source of controversy after it was revealed he
frequently opts for business class and has even taken private jets to election events
Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign, landing tax payers with the $23,000 bill.
One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville and Rockhampton on March 7 but
he also boarded a $15,000 private plane
along the well-travelled Brisbane to Canberra route to attend
his party’s election campaign launch.
Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with Prime Minister
Anthony Albanese being asked if he has included both his son and partner as ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Club members.
He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including an international one
he is alleged to have received from Qantas in new book
The Chairman’s Lounge authored by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.
The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold
onto their two seats after stating they aimed to triple their representation in parliament.
With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained the
Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per cent swing to
the ALP.
However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which
has seen a massive 12.4 per cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.
WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?
The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by
the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.
It has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive club in the country’ and comes with a distinct black card.
Members include senior-ranking MPs including ministers,
state premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders of major unions and sporting groups,
Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities,
major corporate figures and high-profile media personalities.
The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth
and Adelaide but are not signed, you have to
know where to look.
Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings,
wool carpet and marble flooring all bathed in natural light.
Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array of beers, spirits and Australian wines.
Wine bottles are often given as departing gift
Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment
of books and magazines.
Members may bring in two guests at a time.
Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is to board
and your personal preferences are logged for each
flight. Membership also entitles you to first-class facilities at Qantas partner airlines.

Juicing has rapidly become a hot trend among health and wellness fans.
No surprise there, since juicing offers an easy,
quick and delicious way to improve your intake of
important nutrients.
It doesn’t matter if you’re completely new
to juicing, or have been an avid juicer for years.
This comprehensive guide called ‘Juicing 101’ will guide you through the essentials of juicing.
You’ll discover the advantages of juicing. And get some practical tips
to ensure juicing success.
So if you’re ready to begin, let’s launch your journey towards vibrant health and better nutrition.
Understand Juicing
Juicing is essentially the process of extracting liquid
from vegetables and fruits. All that’s left behind is the fibrous pulp.
The process of juicing results in a concentrated dose of essential vitamins, minerals,
and antioxidants in an easily digestible form. By drinking fresh juice
you’ll consume these freshly extracted nutrients. This will
flood your body with goodness, improving your overall
health and fitness while boosting immunity and avoiding diseases.
Advantages of Juicing
There are several significant benefits from juicing. Here are just a
few:
Increased Nutrient Absorption:
Juicing breaks down the walls of plant cells,
releasing nutrients and making them more accessible to your digestive system.
Without any fiber to hinder absorption, all these nutrients quickly and efficiently enter your
body. They provide a quick and efficient nutrient boost.
Enhanced Hydration:
Juices are a great way to stay hydrated. Juicing provides water along with essential vitamins and minerals.
This guarantees that you will not become dehydrated,
or experience any of the unpleasant side effects of this.
Rich in Antioxidants:
Freshly pressed juices are loaded with cancer-fighting
antioxidants. These powerful nutrients help combat free radicals that are generated in your
body regularly.
By helping to reduce oxidative stress, juicing can support a healthy immune system, lower
your risk of diseases and cancer, thereby boosting your health and well being.
Digestive Support:
Juicing removes most of the insoluble fiber in your fruit and vegetable
intake. This makes it easier for your body to absorb nutrients in the juice.
A downside, however, is that you will lack the benefits
of fiber such as regular bowel habits. That is
why it helps to combine juicing with other forms of healthy eating.
How To Get Started with Juicing
Now that you’re convinced about the benefits of juicing,
let’s discuss the right approach to begin your juicing journey.
There are several steps to this process.
1. Choose the Right Juicer:
Selecting the right juicer matters. There are two main types of these appliances:
centrifugal juicers and
masticating juicers.
Centrifugal juicers are fast at juicing. They work well with firm fruits and vegetables.
The blades spin at higher velocity, which extracts
juicer quickly but also loses some of the nutrient value due to heating.
Masticating juicers are also called slow juicers because of their slow speed of
blades. They excel at extracting juice from leafy greens and softer
produce. The process is slow, without any heating at all, which retains most nutrients
and does a good job of extracting all juice from
produce.
2. Select Fresh Produce:
If possible, choose fresh, organic fruits and vegetables to make juice.
Look for the fruits with vibrant colors that are
also firm but ripe. Avoid vegetables or fruits that show
any signs of spoilage.
Try making juices with a variety of fruits and vegetables to
see which flavors and combinations suit you best.
Your creativity is the only limit to the kind of juices you
can whip up.
3. Consider Ease of Preparation and Cleaning:
Make sure to wash your produce thoroughly before juicing.
Remove all seeds, pits, or tough stems.
It’s also important to clean your juicer immediately after use.
That way you’ll avoid residue building up which makes it harder to clean later.
Also, juicer performance and longevity is improved.
Juicing Tips and Techniques
Here are some helpful tricks to squeeze more from your juicing.
1. Balance Flavors:
Trial and error is a part of achieving your ideal juice combinations.
Mix sweeter fruits like apples or carrots with
more bitter or tart options such as kale or lemon. That will
help achieve a harmonious flavor in your juice.
2. Add a Kick:
To enhance the nutritional value and taste of your juice, you can try adding other ingredients such
as ginger, turmeric, or fresh herbs. They will add an exotic flavor to your drink.
3. Store Safely:
Fresh juices are best consumed immediately. But if you need to store it, make sure that you use airtight containers.
Keep fresh squeezed juices refrigerated for no longer than 24-48 hours.
Otherwise, oxidation leads to deteriorating quality and taste.
4. Use up Waste:
Fruit pulp can be used in recipes to make muffins or soups.
It can even be composted for growing other plants.
5. Be Mindful:
Don’t overdo it! It’s true that juicing offers many health benefits.
But juices should be complemented by a balanced and healthy diet.
Strive for variety and moderation to enjoy a well-rounded intake
of nutrients.
6. Start Slowly:
If you’re new to juicing, start with small quantities and gradually increase your intake.
Your body may take a while to adjust to the higher nutrient load.
Going slow prevents any digestive discomfort.
7. Heed Your Body:
If a certain type of juice or ingredient doesn’t agree
with you, avoid it in the future. Rarely, adverse effects like bloating
or stomach discomfort follows juicing. If the problem is not self-limiting, consult your doctor about
it.
8. Personalize Your Experience:
Juicing is personal. Your juice preferences may be unique and individual.
No matter if you want to boost immunity, improve nutrition, detoxify your system, or just enjoy a refreshing cool drink, you can adapt and alter your recipes to your tastes and choice.
9. Educate Yourself:
Be informed about the benefits of juicing. Expand your knowledge.
Learn about any new ingredients you’re using.
Try out fresh recipes and juicing techniques. All of this
will enrich and enhance your juicing experience.
Juicing can bring many advantages to your lifestyle.
You’ll feel better, become healthier, and enjoy your
healthy diet. Combine juicing with exercise and other healthy lifestyle
practices for the best impact.
Juicing 101 lays the foundation for a healthy life.
Listen to your body. Get creative. And have fun with your juicing.

help you choose the ideal juicer to begin your juicing
journey. A comprehensive ‘Juicing 101’ guide

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single
tree from the driveway of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked
by their local council.
Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court, and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a
request to remove a single peppermint tree growing in the middle of their driveway.
The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent,
tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth’s Freshwater
Bay for $20.1million in August.
They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused
the request on the grounds the tree was not dead or deceased.
‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement
is unusual,’ Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting.
‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to reverse out.’
The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be removed on the condition they
paid a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway.
They will also need to plant two replacement trees
on their property.
Paul Holmes a Court (pictured) is the son of Australia’s first billionaire, famed tycoon Robert Holmes a Court, who died suddenly
of heart failure at the age of 53
Paul Holmes à Court and his wife Zara won a council battle to remove a peppermint tree (pictured) from
the driveway of their $20million mansion
Ms Holmes a Court previously claimed the tree’s odd placement also made
it difficult to spot cars turning the corner at a nearby intersection with Bay View Terrace.
After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the meeting,
councillor Douglas Jackson said it was a ‘good outcome’.
‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or expectation,
but also matches the council’s needs at the same time by
ensuring that there is tree cover on the verge of that property,’ he said.
Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it
an offence to damage or remove any mature trees on private property without council approval.
Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of Peppermint Grove
would ‘take a common sense approach’ to the issue.
‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.
I’ve always been on the record that we need
local governments to take a common sense approach to issues,’ Mr Carey told the West
Australian.
‘And I understand people are passionate
about trees. But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.’
According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion – which is
built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River – the sprawling Federation-style property was built in around 1904.
The Holmes à Court property was built in around 1904 in Federation ‘Arts and Crafts’ style
The home boast an unparalleled view of the Swan River overlooking Fresh Water Bay
‘Designed in the rare Federation ‘Arts and Crafts’ style,
the home has retained all its elegance and splendour via lofty ceilings, sweeping verandas,
charming decorative arches, casement-style sash windows,
and walls of French doors that bathe the home in light, reflecting river views beyond,’ the listing said.
The property also features ‘Plush Champagne-hued carpets’ and ‘cobble-stoned remote garage to accommodate six cars, abundant storage, gym area, double vanity rain-shower bathroom and climate-controlled wine cellar.’
Mr Holmes a Court is the chief executive of prize-winning wine label Vasse Felix and the brother of Peter Holmes à Court, who once jointly owned of
the South Sydney Rabbitohs with Russell Crowe,
and climate philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court.

Oct 20 (Reuters) – U.S. cigarette maker Altria Group
Inc said on Wednesday industry peer Philip Morris International Inc has agreed to pay $2.7 billion for the exclusive right
to sell IQOS heated tobacco products in the United States.
IQOS is a smokeless tobacco heating device that was developed by Philip Morris and sold in the United States by Altria until the
U.S. trade regulator banned the import and sale of the product last year following patent claims from rival
R.J. Reynolds.
Philip Morris is looking to
overturn the ban
.
Altria, which sells cigarette brands like Marlboro in the United States, was spun off from Philip Morris
International in 2008 when the company wanted to separate
its U.S. and overseas businesses.
Altria said one of its subsidiaries had an option to extend the IQOS
contract until April 2029 after it had reached certain milestones.
However, Philip Morris disagreed with Altria’s position.
“The parties were unable to reach a long-term agreement and decided to enter into the Agreement to transition and ultimately conclude their relationship,” Altria
said in a statement.
Philip Morris, which reports quarterly results later on Thursday, aims to resume supply of IQOS products in the United States by the first half
of 2023.
Altria still holds the rights to sell IQOS
in the United States until May 2024, after which it transitions to Philip Morris.
“We are ready to invest behind IQOS to bring it to market at scale across the U.S.,” Philip Morris Chief Executive Officer Jacek Olczak said.
Altria said it has already received $1 billion from Philip Morris and will receive the
remainder by July 2023.
Separately, Philip Morris
raised its buyout offer
for Swedish Match AB in a last-ditch effort to get shareholder support for its $16 billion move into the fast-growing market for cigarettes

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the
country following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday
it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled all
product launches for the year in Russia.
It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA
devices, as well as related investment of $150 million.
Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments
and decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the country.
Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer its Russian business to a local third party, joining BAT in exiting the sanction-hit country.

Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up
store offering shoppers ‘incredible’ deals on clothing, homewares, food, and electronics.
The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria to help
shoppers get through the cost of living crisis ravaging the
country.
Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that works to provide support
and assistance to people in need.
Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.
Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2
bags of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from
Boston Bros.
Shoppers will find men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes from top brands, and even electrical goods at the Vinnies pop-up locations.
Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes,
printers, and kitchen knives from previous pop-up shops.
There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3 November, and another
in Boronia which will remain open until Christmas – or
until stock runs out.

A new store will open in Richmond at Dimmey’s on 7 November.
The themed Richmond location will focus on goods for Christmas, summer, and the holiday season – but it will also include household items, Bric-à-brac,
and electrical items.
Shoppers have shared their thoughts on the pop-up locations online.
‘They have all the trending products – it’s so awesome,’ one said.
‘I bought a hair dryer from Vinnies and I’m obsessed with
it,’ another wrote.
‘I always have such good luck at Vinnies, I have to go,’ a
woman added.
For those interested in the finer things, shoppers have discovered a ‘hidden gem’ discount retailer where you can find designer buys from brands like
Fendi, Dior, and Aje for affordable prices.
TK Maxx – which has stores in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South
Australia – is the answer to buying new clothes and shoes on a budget.

Beth Zazlan, from Queensland, recently found a gold mine of
clothing lines from Australian brands like Camilla and Marc, Acler, Bec+Bridge, Shona Joy,
Dion Lee, Zimmerman, and Acler.
‘I was there for a pillow but I ended up grabbing some sparkly earrings from [American jewellery brand] Badgley Mischka,’ Beth told FEMAIL.
TK Maxx sells old stock from previous seasons – and shoppers have
described it as a ‘clearance treasure hunt’.
Many have seen bags from Fendi, Dior, and Bottega Venetta on sale.
Others have spotted Gucci and Versace sunglasses, Hugo Boss accessories, and Christopher Esber dresses.
Beth said, ‘I was truly blown away – so if you’re looking for a bargain, head there.’
A David Jones employee revealed in a comment that discounted items from stores that aren’t sold are shipped to TK
Maxx.

Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International on Thursday said it would be filing a
premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) in the United States for its IQOS ILUMA product in October.
The company at its investor day said that while the PMTA timeline remains “hard to predict”, it expects the launch of the ILUMA heated tobacco units
towards the second half of its three-year forecast period of 2024 to 2026.
IQOS heats up packets of ground tobacco but does not burn them,
a process the company says potentially results in fewer health risks
than traditional smoking
A PMTA is required to sell new tobacco products
in the United States, with manufacturers required to provide scientific
data demonstrating a product is appropriate for the protection of public health.

Students from a Melbourne private school were sexually inappropriate in public and at school
and sexually harassed and intimated a young female teacher,
a leaked document has alleged.
The toxic culture among boys at St Bernard’s College in Essendon emerged after independent interviews with
staff members.
Teachers from the Christian Brothers catholic college detailed their concerns to an Independent Education Union of Victoria official, who compiled them into
a 13-page report which has since been leaked.
The damning development is more bad news for under-fire
Christian Brothers institutions after another school
in the network was plagued by appalling student behaviour
in May and their governing body was slammed in a report by KPMG two weeks ago.
The toxic culture among boys at St Bernard’s College
(main) at Essendon emerged after independent interviews with staff
members.
St Bernard’s College principal, Dr Michael Davies, (pictured) said he took the allegations
‘extremely seriously’ but defended most of the boys
In one instance a young female teacher feared for her safety after receiving threats from
a male student who sexually harassed her, the Herald-Sun reported.
The teacher claimed the boy told her he knew the route she
took home and correctly named the suburb she lived in after asking
if she attended a gym there.
The same woman was subjected to comments about ‘her looks’ from another
boy, who openly objectified her.
Another student was suspended for giving a Nazi salute while in class.

A swastika was etched into the teacher’s whiteboard in the same classroom and only removed two weeks later.
St Bernard’s College has 1,600 students from Year 7
through to Year 12.
The school took the allegations ‘extremely seriously’, claimed its principal, Dr Michael Davies in a letter to parents and
caregivers.
He said ‘the vast majority’ of the school’s students ‘live our positive values’.

The letter sent by St Bernard’s College principal Dr Michael Davies to parents ahead of media coverage
about a leaked report into student behaviour
Dr Davies told parents that staff ‘acted immediately to condemn the unacceptable actions and punish the students.’
But in the report teachers alleged the school failed
to properly deal with staff complaints.
The school’s boys acted inappropriately in public on several
occasions, it was also alleged.
During an excursion some boys simulated sex while others shared sexual imagery during a Melbourne tram
trip, one teacher claimed.
‘On an excursion [teacher’s name withheld] had a group of boys on a tram where they proceeded to sing who let the
dogs out in relation to a woman,’ said one anecdote from the report.

It also alleged students acted inappropriately sexual during class at the school
Boys in a Year 9 class were ‘dry humping’ each
other, while Year 11 students were comparing penis sizes.
Some of the teachers told the union official they believed the
school’s attitude to sexual harassment and
violence by students was at times ‘boys will be boys’.
They also told the official they were worried that reporting of the incidents could reflect on their teaching rather than the ‘appalling’
conduct of the boys.
The report recommended the school needed to appoint ‘an independent person’ to handle staff complaints.

Educators at a private Catholic school ‘don’t feel safe walking across the school yard’ (stock image)
The school, whose motto means ‘to learn what is right and then to put it into practice’, is part of he Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) network.
The EREA network was formerly known as the Christian Brothers.
Dr Davies pointed out in his letter to parents that the St Bernard’s College’s ‘respectful relationships program’ was being audited by child and
youth wellbeing researcher, Professor Helen Cahill.
In May teachers at St Kevin’s College, another Christian Brothers school, ‘don’t feel safe’ after year seven and eight boys
were caught out rating female staff’s genitals on a sickening list.
A teacher revealed the boys had been ranking ‘staff members’ p*****s’ and
rating the sexual attractiveness of each other’s sisters.
The shocking claims came after an internal review in July 2021 found that the $20,
995-a-year school had a ‘sexist’ and ‘misogynist’ culture.
The KPMG report into the Trustees of Edmund Rice Education Australia (TEREA) said the
body was ‘absent’ and had ‘evaded accountability’.
Catholic Education Commission Victoria ordered the KPMG report
and demanded sweeping changes to TEREA.

Joaquin Phoenix looked lovingly at his sister Rain as
she supported him on the red carpet at the Joker: Folie à
Deux premiere on Wednesday.
Attending the event, which took place during the 81st
Venice International Film Festival, the siblings stood side-by-side while smiling for photos at Sala Grande
The film is the much-anticipated follow-up
to 2019’s Academy Award-winning Joker, which earned more than $1 billion at the
global box office and remains the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
The second instalment finds Arthur Fleck institutionalised at Arkham
awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker.
‘While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true
love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him,’ a press release shared.
The last time that Joaquin played The Joker, Arthur Fleck, he had to drop three and a
half stone. He went on a diet of lettuce, asparagus and apples.
Five years later he has returned to the Oscar-winning role
again in – and says that he had to lose almost the same amount of weight once more, and is never doing it again.
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said: ‘I’m not going to talk through specifics of the
diet, because I just think nobody wants to hear that.
‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there
was so much dance rehearsal that we were doing, which I didn’t have
last time.
‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe. But you’re
right, I’m now 49, I probably shouldn’t do this again. This is probably it for me.’
The actor, 49, wore a smart black tuxedo with a white shirt, bow
tie and a pair of sunglasses for the hotly-anticipated event
Folie à Deux will see Joaquin reprise his role
as Arthur Fleck AKA Joker and is set for release on October
4 (pictured with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn)
He added: ‘I know I was responsible last time for talking about it, but it’s
difficult to do so.
‘That becomes your obsession because you’re
working the entire time to get to a certain weight.
‘So then you end up talking about it, and then it just sounds
like an actor going on and on about how much weight they lost.
‘By the end of that run I was so sick of myself and angry
at myself for making such a big deal about that part, because you just do what
you’re ****ing supposed to do. So this time I
was like, ‘I’m not going to do that’.’

Thrive, a16z, Insight and GIC to lead $9.5 billion funding round

Databricks plans $4.5 billion debt raise, including $2.5
billion term loan, source says
By Krystal Hu, Kenrick Cai, Echo Wang
Dec 13 (Reuters) – Software firm Databricks is nearing a deal
that could become one of the largest venture capital funding rounds in history, as investors have shown a strong appetite to own a piece
of the fast-growing data analytics firm, three sources said on Friday.
The round, almost twice oversubscribed, could top $9.5 billion when it is finalized
next week, exceeding the company’s original goal and higher than what was discussed
earlier, the sources told Reuters, cautioning the final number could still go
up.
The San Francisco-based company, which helps enterprises process and
analyze their data, is expected to fetch a valuation of over $60 billion at a price
of $92.50 per share. That price is considered
a bargain in the eyes of some investors, given that the company’s projected revenue
for the next fiscal year is $3.8 billion, said
the sources, who requested anonymity to discuss private matters.
Thrive Capital and returning investors Andreessen Horowitz,
Insight Partners, as well as Singaporean sovereign wealth fund GIC are expected to lead this
mega round, according to one of the sources.
In conjunction with the equity raise, the company is also
in talks to raise $4.5 billion in debt financing, including a $2.5 billion term loan from direct lenders, one of the sources added.
Bloomberg first reported on the private debt raise.
Databricks, founded in 2013, is a data analytics and artificial-intelligence company.
It provides a cloud-based platform to help enterprises build and govern data and AI applications.
Databricks and Thrive Capital declined to comment. Insight, Andreessen Horowitz and
GIC did not immediately respond to request for comment.
This high-profile round would mark a jump in valuation for the 11-year-old company that
has yet to make a profit. The firm was valued at $43 billion in September.
The move would also be a major win for early employees, as the company plans to dedicate the funding
to buy back expiring restricted stock units from early employees and cover the associated
tax costs. As part of the deal, the company plans to issue preferred shares to investors participating in the round, the sources said.
Databricks has benefited from the AI boom by selling more tools that help clients build
and deploy AI applications using the growing volume of data
they already store with the company. It competes with Snowflake, which commands
a market cap of about $56 billion with expected revenue
of $3.4 billion in the fiscal year ending in January 2025.
The move to raise outsized funding specifically to address the expiring employee
options issue, instead of adding to its balance sheet,
mirrors a move by payment company Stripe, which raised $6.5 billion last year
at a valuation of $50 billion.
Such mega deals highlight the amount of funds available in the venture capital system and the appetite for top-notch names.
Investors are doubling down on AI companies and supporting firms to remain private longer, enabling rarely seen round
sizes such as OpenAI’s $6.5 billion raise at a $165 billion valuation and xAI’s $6 billion raise.
The move signals that Databricks and other
top public market candidates are in no rush to go public,
despite expectations of a resurgence of venture capital-backed initial public offerings in 2025.
