Умная и очень одаренная Мэрилин больше всего на свете хотела стать врачом. На дворе конец 60-х, женщина-врач ещё редкость. Мать Мэрилин видит для неё другое будущее – домик, детки, славный муж. Лидия – центр вселенной своих родителей, ей было уготовано великое будущее, но однажды Лидия просто исчезла из дома. Спустя несколько дней она была найдена мёртвой.
Нет, это не детектив и даже не триллер. Это книга о том, как даже стараясь быть самыми прекрасными родителями, можно все провафлить, ничего не знать о своих детях и не понимать их, видя в них только свои мечты и реализацию своих неисполнившихся планов. Теткам с детьми очень советую.
Энн Тайлер “Катушка синих ниток”.
После “Лестницы лет” я решила у автора ничего не читать. Но отзывы заставили сделать второй подход к снаряду.
Тайлер пишет книги “за жизнь”, о простых людях, простых ситуациях, без драмы-драмы.
Это – семейная сага о семействе Уитшенк. Патриарх семьи, Джуниор Уитшенк, построил дом для богатых клиентов и вложил в него всю душу, причём его семья жила, как попало, пока он бесконечно что-то совершенствовал в этом доме. Его сын Ред пошёл по его стопам и тоже стал строителем. У него было четверо детей, Стем пошёл по его стопам, а Денни вырос долбоебом, который не мог найти свое место в жизни. Но когда отец и мать состарились, Денни приехал, чтобы жить с ними. Хотя Стем с семьёй уже к ним тоже перебрался. Но ведь он даже не был Уитшенком!
Семейные секреты, праздники, обеды и ужины, обычное счастливое течение жизни обычной семьи. Но что меня поразило: не то, как плохо родители знают своих детей, а то, что дети ничего не знают о жизни родителей до их появления. Хорошая книга, немного грустная, но не тоскливая.
Элисон Лури “Иностранные связи”.
Винни Майнер – серьёзная ученая дама, которая занимается детским фольклором. Однажды для того, чтобы собрать материал, она отправляется в длительную поездку в Лондон. Здесь Винни чувствует себя совершенно своей. Молодой коллега Винни, необычайно красивый молодой человек, который приехал в Лондон писать книгу, наоборот чувствует себя крайне паршиво и неуверенно. Видимо, из-за того, что тяжело переживает разрыв с женой. Но вскоре он получит утешение.
Винни же 54 года, она не верит в любовь и брак. Не то чтобы ей попадались одни мерзавцы или кто-то её обидел. Просто она маленькая, невзрачная, некрасивая, мужчины привыкли с ней дружить, а не любить. Винни считает, что в любом случае ей уже поздно и ставит на себе крест.
Вы думаете, эти двое чего-то там замутят? Вовсе нет, это две параллельные истории.
Книга получила Пулитцеровскую премию, и совершенно заслуженно. Её хочется читать внимательно и разбирать на цитаты. Она немного ироничная и немного грустная. И что удивительно, никому из персонажей не хочется наподдать.
“Но, сколько бы ни было человеку лет, его мировосприятие подчиняется обычным законам оптики. Какую бы малозначительную роль ни играли мы в жизни других людей, для себя самого каждый из нас — центр мироздания. А мир, размышляет Винни, — это вам не английская литература. Он полон людей за пятьдесят, которым жить и здравствовать еще добрую четверть века, у которых предостаточно времени для приключений и перемен, а то и для подвигов и прозрений.
Зачем, в конце концов, переходить на вторые роли в собственной жизни? Почему бы не представить себя исследователем, перед которым простираются новые земли, еще не описанные в литературе, — заинтересованным, увлеченным, готовым к сюрпризам?”
Мэри Маргарет Кей “В тени луны”.
Девочка Винтер, дочь британской аристократки и испанского графа, родилась в Индии. Родители её погибли, и она была отправлена к прадедушке в Англию. Дедушка, стремясь устроить её судьбу, в её 12 лет договорился о её браке с чиновникам из Индии, дальним родственником. Винтер и сама была не против, ведь статный красавец ей понравился, ей показалось, что он о ней позаботится. И когда настало время, с удовольствием уехала от неприятных английских родственников. Сопровождать её к жениху должен был его подчиненный, который тщетно пытался объяснить ей и родственникам, что представляет из себя его начальник. Но упрямая, как баран, Винтер все равно ломилась к жениху.
Склероз все-таки хорошая болезнь. Два года назад я читала этой же авторки “Далекие шатры”, зашли они мне тяжело и оставили мрачное впечатление. С именами у меня очень плохо, имя авторки я забыла. Увидев рецензию на эту книгу, я решила, что она отлично подойдёт под “британскую романтическую классику”. Но примерно страниц через 200 что-то забрезжило в мозгу: британское владычество в Индии, война в Афганистане. Аааа!!! Но бросать было поздно. И внезапно эта книга оказалась лучше и интереснее. Но и намного страшнее. Тётки мрут при родах, с героями автор не церемонится, с читателем тоже, чедро потчуя его ужасами восстания сипаев и заодно ханжеством викторианской эпохи. Присутствующий асисяй скорее идёт фоном к историческим событиям.
