Авторка книги уверяла, что она основана на реальных событиях, якобы подобный случай произошел, когда она училась в колледже. В книге/сериале/фильме действие происходит в 1900 году. Трое учениц и учительница пропали во время пикника на Валентинов день. Были проведены тщательные поиски, найдена одна из девушек, но она ничего не помнила.
Наташычка Дормер играет директрису, даму с очень темным прошлым. Атмосфера создателям вполне удалась: мрачная, строгая обстановка школы, где девочек жучат и бьют розгами по рукам. При этом девочки, лишенные общества особей противоположного пола, плющатся друг по другу. И в противовес этой обстановке – яркие, солнечные, напоенные жизнью австралийские пейзажи.
Авторка книги и режиссер фильма оставил финал открытым. Часть зрителей пучило, а часть наоборот восторгалась этим, выдвигая собственные версии. Спустя 20 лет авторка выпустила продолжение, где объяснила тайну исчезновения. Но создатели сериала решили не брать ее во внимание.
