Не стоит повторять: фильм Пашендаль: Последний бой

Дед известного канадского актера Пола Гросса сражался в Первую мировую, но не особо об этом распространялся. “В конце он совсем потерял рассудок. Он начал рассказывать мне о жутких событиях, произошедших с ним во время боя в маленьком городишке, превращённом Первой мировой в руины. Он там убил кого-то недостойным, чудовищным образом, и это преследовало его всю оставшуюся жизнь. Мой дед умирал, а в мыслях он возвращался в тот город, всё пытаясь найти этого немецкого мальчика, которого он убил штыком. И жил он с этим воспоминанием всю свою жизнь, храня его вдали от остальных.” Это настолько поразило Гросса, что он решил снять фильм, посвященный участию Канады в Первой мировой – “Пашендаль: Последний бой» (Passchendaele).

Битва при Пашендале или третья битва при Ипре – одно из самых ужасных и грязных (буквально) сражений Первой мировой. Британское командование облажалось по полнй программе, не учтя рельеф местности и погодные условия. Практически непрерывно несколько месяцев лил дождь, превращая все вокруг в ужасное болото, через которое не могли прогрестись танки (их едва начали использовать). Люди буквально сидели в ямах, наполненых водой. Погибло около 600 000 человек. Битва считается символом солдатских страданий в невыносимых условиях.

Главный герой фильма, сержант Майкл МакКрэй Данн (так звали дедушку Гросса), демобилизован и страдает от ПТСР. Его отправляют в Канаду вербовать солдат. Вместо этого он влюбляется в медсестру. А у той есть брат, непригодный к службе из-за астмы. Когда салага все же просачивается на фронт, сержант возвращается к службе, чтобы за ним приглядывать. Медсестра пристраивается в кильватер.

Сама битва, окопные ужасы, грязища, крысы, антисанитария показаны масштабно и до отвращения правдоподобно. Тема бессмысленности войны раскрыта полностью. Любовная линия хромает на две ноги и в фильме не очень-то нужна, там и без того есть чем шокироваться и от чего рыдать. Сцену с молодым убитым немцем Гросс в сюжет, конечно, вставил и сам сыграл главную роль в фильме.
