События книги разворачиваются в конце 20 века и в 12 веке параллельно, причем про 12 век написано отлично, а про 20 век ну такое. Совеременная тетка, попав на сеанс к гипнотизеру, погружается в жизнь Мод де Браоз, леди Брамбер, одной из крутейших теток своего времени. Мод выдают замуж за приверженца гнусного принца Джона, но она тайно влюблена в другого мужика. У современной тетки все не слава богу тоже: она рассталась с любовником, но все еще его любит, а ее саму вожделеет гнусный же брат любовника. Все смешалось в доме Облонских и голове тетки: мужья, любовники, 20 век и 12-й, ее жизнь и жизнь Мод. У тетки едет крыша, читатель удивляется финалу сильно-сильно.

В развеселом 12 веке в Уэльсе жила девочка Мод Сен-Валери. Семья ее была из понаехавших вместе с Вильгельмом Завоевателем, чему местные жители были, мягко говоря, не рады. Замуж ее выдали за Уильяма де Браоза, тоже норманна, который был богат сам по себе, да ещё получил все имения первой жены. В общем, семейство просто лопалось от богачеств.
Уильям был плотно занят, лавируя между дуpнoватыми Плантагенетами и умудряясь все время оставаться на плаву. При гнycнoм принце Джоне, когда тот стал королем, ему жилось особенно хорошо. Мод же сидела в Уэльсе, потому что муж, хоть и был на 20 лет старше, всецело на нее полагался и не зря. Мод управляла своими землями и очень успешно отбивалась от валлийцев, выдерживая осады замков и наводя порядки. С учётом образцово-показательной резьбы по непокорным аристократам, устроенной Уильямом, это было особенно сложно. Baллийцы боялись Мод до усрачки и придумывали про нее легенды вроде той, что свой замок Хэй она построила за ночь, перенося камни в юбке. Несмотря на плотную занятость, семейство родило 16 детей. Но здоровье Мод было несокрушимо.
Увы, семейство владело тайной гнycнoго принца Джона: он угандонил настоящего наследника аaнглийсkoгo престола, своего племянника Артура Бретонского. Чтобы заручиться лояльностью де Брaозов, Гн.Пр.Джон потребовал старших детей Мод в заложники, на что та ответила, что не доверила бы королю драной кошки. Гн.Пр.Джон взбесился, отобрал у де Брaозов все владения, а самих стал преследовать. Уильям сбежал, а Мод и ее старшего сына король уморил голодом в подвале одного из замков (Корф)
Я ведь уже говорила, что принц Джон – штопанный гондон? Так вот он был ещё и тyпoй. Своих детей Брозы исключительно удачно женили/выдали замуж. И все эти их друзья и родственники примкнули к бунту баронов против Гн.Пр.Джона, хотя бы потому, что не хотели, чтобы король сделал с ними такое же, когда ему под хвост попадет вожжа. В ходе этого срача Гн.Пр.Джон все просрал, а Ричерт ЛС в очередной раз перевернулся в трёх местах.
