Праздничное чтиво: Случайному гостю

Oh, the weather outside is frightful! (петь голосом Дина Мартина или Синатры). Магазины начали украшаться к праздникам, а в разных буржуйских странах скоро откроются рождественские базарчики. Раз в неделю буду выкладывать рождественско-новогоднее: книгу или фильм. И начну прямо сегодня, потому что книга очень толстая! И эту толстую книгу я считаю лучшим рождественским романом эвер. Именно с такой книгой хочется кублиться в пледик и есть мандарины. И эту книгу тоже натурально хочется съесть.

В Вигилию на стол ставят лишний прибор – Случайному гостю, предназначенный оказавшимся в святой вечер в дороге или застигнутым у порога бурей. Иногда это просто прибор для отсутствующих или недавно умерших родственников. И этот гость непременно прийдет.
1984 год. Мальчик Лесик, 12ти лет, приезжает на Рождество к бабушке, в некий город, в котором все читающие угадывают Львов. Ну право слово, в каком ещё городе в СССР могут так говорить, такое есть и отмечать католическое Рождество?
Почему Лесик не в школе (каникулы, вроде, ещё не начались) и где его родители, автор не объясняет, прохватывается парой слов в конце. Лесик и бабушка неспешно готовятся к празднику, добывают дефицитные продукты, наносят странные визиты и долго, смачно и затейливо готовят. Лесик без восторга, ведь его ждут “Крестоносцы”.
Впрочем, читателю эта готовка диковинных (а для центральной Украины они диковинные) блюд и бесконечные пикировки внука с бабушкой доставляют истинное удовольствие, ведь бабушка говорит на совершенно чудесной смеси русского, украинского, немецкого и польского, вставляя изредка латынь. Кроме того, зараза мальчик не лезет за словом в карман.
Мальчик, как и все в его семье, обладает неким даром. В его случае это умение видеть призраков, которых он называет гостями, дар предвидения и зачатки телепатии. Гадкий мальчик случайно выпивает бабушкино зелье и усиливает свой дар многократно, пробуждая тем самым к жизни какое-то зло.
В общем, я не знаю, с чем можно сравнить эту книгу. Автор немного курил Алису, Мастера и Маргариту и чуть-чуть Гарри Поттера. Но его книга получилась очень самобытной. Самое главное тут, как ни странно, не сюжет, а непередаваемая рождественская атмосфера со всеми этими приготовлениями, украшениями квартиры (которая сама по себе персонаж, ведь одна её стена это стена бывшего кляштора, в котором застряло ещё турецкое пушечное ядро!), традициями и обычаями Адвента. Потом невероятно красочный язык и совершенно прекрасные диалоги. Я не могу это передать, потому просто сфоткала пару фрагментов.
Ну и в-третьих все-таки сюжет. Что это за зло? Что или кто ему нужен? Невзирая на некоторую неспешность и камерность повествования (а по сути все происходит в одной квартире), текст очень плотный, он насыщен персонажами и всякой интересной информацией от истории появления пряников до рецептов некоторых блюд.
Не пугайтесь фантастичности сюжета, читайте. Потому что это  “абсолютный люкс” © 

Кофе был всегда, — загадочно ответила бабушка. — То мы тут так — на часочек.

Я смогу летать, — восторженно пропищал я. — Или сделаться невидимым.
— Ежели до вечера ты не вынесешь мусор, — сказала бабушка, — то летать будешь абсолютно — по кухне!

В принципе бабушка была права — выражение «безумный, как шляпник» имеет под собой реальную основу. Мех или фетр для шляп раньше обрабатывали с помощью ртути, ртутное же отравление совсем не шутка, а необратимое повреждение головного мозга. Соответственно, мастера, делавшие шляпы, страдали судорогами, слабоумием, потерей памяти и галлюцинациями.

В Средневековье, одновременно с тем, как рыцари Храма догадались мыть перед едой руки, пришла мода на ароматные сарацинские коренья и на их пряный вкус. Пряности стали добавлять во всё, в том числе и в медовые коржики. Тогда-то печеньица и изменили название: из «медовиков» стали «пряниками», то есть перчеными.

— Святой Николай, — не устаёт повторять начиная с шестого декабря бабушка, — безконечне даёт нам знак. Что бы ты сказал, если б ризочка не была серебря́на?

— Что вы жалеете фольги для меня, — бурчу я.

— Что ты был неслух и расстраивал старших весь год, — ведёт своё бабушка. — Но твоя ризочка серебрится. Что то означает?

— Надежда есть! — бодро отвечаю я. — Фольги хватило.
