Детектив Роб трудится в отделе расследования убийств, куда он долго мечтал попасть. Все в отделе, конечно, думают, что он спит со своей напарницей, Кэсси, но это не так. Это пример идеальной дружбы, понимания и сотрудничества. Кэсси – одна из немногих, кто знает о прошлом Роба. В детстве он жил в небольшом ирландском городке Нокнари. Однажды он и его друзья пропали в лесу. Нашли только его, всего в крови и ничего не помнящего о произошедшем.
Родители сменили ему имя и отправили в интернат. Прошлое не особо мешает Робу функционировать, он загнал его поглубже. Но в Нокнари снова совершено убийство ребенка: это девочка, которую нашли на месте археологических раскопок. Роб полагает, что справится, и решает не открываться начальству, справедливо полагая, что его отстранят от дела. И подспудно считая, что между делами есть связь.
Есть такие книги, дочитав которую, хочется сесть в углу и тоненько повыть. Преступление раскрыто, мотивы установлены, чего же боле? Но автор оставляет читателя неудовлетворенным, а также делает ему грустно и больно очень ловко. Личная трагедия Роба, его ослепительные воспоминания о последнем лете с друзьями, боль его потери и сожаления об утраченной дружбе и, наконец, его нынешняя история. Мало он страдал в детстве, давай добавим.
Прекрасно прописаны и очень привлекательны персонажи и их отношения. Отлично раскрыта тема психопатов (теперь вы такое будете видеть в каждом), обстоятельно и интересно показана работа полиции. В общем, это не простенький детектив, где мисс Мурпл за чашкой чая угадывает, кто убил викария. И на само убийство мисс Мурпл, в общем-то насрать. Олдскульные детективы были хороши тем, что эмоционально не вовлекали читателя. Этот же умудряется вынуть из него всю душу.
