Если есть приданое, если у неё хорошо забинтованы ноги, если она красива, есть шанс удачно спихнуть её замуж. Но девочка это отрезанный ломоть. Правда, есть и гуманные традиции (в некоторых областях) : до рождения первого ребёнка девочка живёт в родном доме и ей можно его посещать в праздники. В целом жизнь строжайшим образом регламентирована и зарегулирована. При этом прав нет никаких. И только родив мальчика и пережив собственную свекровь женщина может вздохнуть свободнее.
В книге идёт речь о девочке по имени Лилия из бедной семьи, которой ноги сломали исключительно удачно, потому её ждёт хороший брак. В её пользу также играет то, что у нее есть лаотун – это такой специальный женский союз, который заключается на всю жизнь. Именно лаотун это вторая половинка, а вовсе не муж.
Лилия – дочь крестьянина, а Снежный Цветок происходит из прекрасной, утонченной семьи. Они переписываются с помощью специального женского письма, нушу. А все важные события и послания записывают на веере.
Они стали лаотун ещё в детстве и их отношения длились всю жизнь.
Буду краток: это полный *%#*@!!!!! Хочется орать, швыряться предметами и рыдать. Но огромное спасибо автору за то, с какой скрупулезностью она изучила традиции, ритуалы и правила. И за то, что без всякого асисяя доносит это до читателя.
“Девушки из Шанхая”.
1937 год, Шанхай. Две сестры выросли в довольно зажиточной семье, принадлежащей к верхам шанхайского общества. Они беззаботны, не интересуются политикой, современны и даже позируют для рекламных календарей. И тут оказывается, что отец девушек проигрался в пух и прах, притом должен опасной банде. Чтобы рассчитаться с долгами, он отдаёт дочерей замуж по сговору за людей, которых они никогда не видели. Их мужья (американцы китайского происхождения) специально приехали из Америки, чтобы жениться на китаянках. Вскоре после свадьбы мужья уезжают, и девушки не собираются ехать за ними. Но начинается война с Японией, и им придётся принять решение.
Роман грустный и жёсткий. Тут и жестокость японцев, и жестокость иммиграционных властей, и бедность, и тяготы жизни под страхом депортации, и антикоммунистическая истерия.
При этом написано так увлекательно, что оторваться невозможно.
“Влюбленная Пион”.
В конце 16 века была написана китайская пьеса “Пионовая беседка”. Она стала такой популярной, особенно среди молодых девушек, что они в подражание героине пьесы стали отказываться от пищи, чахнуть и умирать от любовного томления. На самом деле это был единственный способ для девушки распорядиться своей жизнью, потому что только умерев героиня пьесы смогла соединиться со своим возлюбленным.
Героиня книги, Пион, тоже помешана на этой пьесе и в то время, когда пьесу ставят в доме её отца, она случайно сталкивается в саду с молодым человеком и влюбляется в него, притом взаимно. Но ничего из этого получиться не может, ведь Пион помолвлена, хотя никогда даже не видела своего жениха.
В общем, тут много всего. Традиций, обрядов и суеверий, что само по себе очень интересно, исторических отступлений и рассуждений о месте женщины в обществе. В китайской семье того времени девочка – позор семьи, лишний рот. Она нужна только для того, чтобы выдать её замуж для рождения сыновей. Её жизни зарегулирована целым сводом правил, она живёт замкнуто, во внутренних покоях и не имеет возможности даже видеть мужчин, не принадлежащих к её семье. Если девушка умерла незамужней, её не будут почитать, как предка, и её судьба даже в загробном мире будет незавидной. Что, впрочем, ерунда по сравнению с судьбой женщин, умерших в родах или во время беременности. Они попадают на Кровавое озеро, где их пытают демоны.
