Майору Петтигрю 68 лет. Несколько лет назад он потерял жену, а недавно – брата. Сын вырос и стал яппи, думающим только о деньгах, майор разочарован и думает, что упустил его. От брата осталось ценное ружье, которое их отцу подарил махараджа. Второе такое ружье находится у майора и по заветам отца он должен их объединить.
Живёт он в крошечном городке, где нравы чопорны и очень консервативны. Но они очень стараются быть толерантными, например, покупают продукты у миссис Али, недавно овдовевшей владелицы магазина.
Её муж, выходец из Пакистана, завещал магазин ей, вопреки семейным традициям. Но недавно в магазине появился злобный племянник, который явно хочет прибрать магазин к рукам. И майору стало неприятно там бывать. А ведь недавно он открыл в миссис Али чудесную собеседницу. Оказывается, ее отец был учёным, а их дом был полон книг. После его смерти книги продали или сожгли.
Впервые после смерти жены майор начинает чувствовать себя живым. Но может ли из этой симпатии что-то получится? Ведь они принадлежат к разным мирам. А местные дамы так и мечтают устроить личное счастье майора.
Восхитительно! Это смешно. Такая пародия на замшелые деревенские британские нравы, чего один званый вечер в стиле Великих Моголов в гольф-клубе стоит. Это мило и очень жизнеутверждающе. И немного бесяще, ведь некоторым персонажам хотелось дать пинка.
